I have one of the refab 160 gallon ponds with fall. My question is how do you know the depth each different pond plant goes. Maybe not worded right...how many inches of water over the top of the pot. How about a book>
Have papyrus KING TUT, pickerel, elephant ears, lilies, cat tails...the lilies are on the bottom that I knew, but the others I am just guessing.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Plant depth
D, I have a book called 'Complete Guide to Water Gardens' and it talks about plants and their recommended depth. The pickerel, being a marginal, says grow it in up 5" deep or along the sides.
Cattails in 6 - 12 " deep
Elephant ears up to 12" deep
Papyrus 2" deep
That's what this book says...hope this helps
D, do you have alot of fish and what kinds?
My pond is only 225 gallons. At one time I had koi, but they got so big I gave them away, 2 of them were 19" long, they were so beautiful. Now I have goldfish, they sort of look like koi without the whiskers. lol
WaterLilies are ideal from 12" to 18" above crown to surface of water - the rest listed should do well from 2" to 6" water coverage. Good rule of thumb- remember long stem plants -shallower is better- as they grow up stems are stronger and usually more upright- provided they have good root system.
Hey! We have a representative from Perry's water garden here! Welcome!

I have 8 fish, 2 butterfly small koi, one orange and white koi, one almost all black with white fins, 2 koi are about 8" now...
I just hope someday to get any of these up to that lenght.
My friend has a 8,000 gal pond that is super so if ever they get too big will give to her.
I have 4 lilies 3 do not know the color or name and one is red and can not think of name.
That is interesting to know about the stem...simple if you remember that ..thank you perryswater.
I will have to see what perrys water is about.

Thanks!
Can only jump in and out of discussions-very busy!!! More time this Winter. Talk to you when I can.

I am learning also that the Koi love to scatter the aqua planting mix all over the bottom of the pond right after I clean it.
Thanks, it is super busy for me as well as I am a commerical iris and daylily grower.

I'm sure T was on a coffee break! :) Please pop in when you can. I like that rule of thumb, makes it easier to remember. Thx
Iris, that sounds like a great job!
I have a fiberglass pond that was given to me when a friend dug a 'real' pond. Someday I hope to give it away when I dig a real pond. I hope it will be in my lifetime lol. The soil is hardpan clay after about 12". Now if I can just find someone who's giving away their backhoe because they're moving up to something bigger.
The soil in the non commerical area is rock hard clay, had a back hoe guy come in dig the two stubs of trees out and more 8 lavender plants and 3 boxwood and dig the hole for the 160 gallon pre form pond and fall. I have 10 koi all about 3-5" and one shebondine (sp) that is just about 1".
Just cleaned my pond last week and this week they tilled the field next door and then last night decided to burn all the fields next to us and all around us so this Sunday I will be out there cleaning the pond again...GRUUUUUUU
