Does this forum do a round robin hoya swap?

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

I was looking at the houseplant forum, and noticed that they are on their round four of a houseplant swap, and was wondering if this forum has ever done anything like that. If so, was it successful, and if not, was/ is there not an interest?
Thanks,
Sara

Hi Sara, we had a secret hoya exchange last summer. Is that what you're thinking of? It was successful from my perspective. What did others think about it?

I think it would be FUN! A last bash before the end of the year and winter!!!

Christine, you did a great job organizing the hoya trade last year!.....

Sandy

Thanks Sandy. I'd be happy to give tips to the person who wants to take the helm this year.

Sandy, where you volunteering back there to organize the swap? Couldn't tell from your post. If you don't want to, I could be persuaded...

Cool, Sandy and Mark!! Any more volunteers? We could have a vote!

This sounds fun....Count me in.

Sandy, I think it would be less confusing if one person did it. Since you WERE offering first, please take it, and I'll do the next one!

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Yeah, this sounds super fun, I go away for a day, junking for plant stands, and now there is a swap. I would love to join too. Thought about the house plant one, but am slowly giving away house plants to make room for hoyas.

How does this work anyway? I was in one from another forum that involved a big box of cuttings that went from place to place with each person taking out some & puting in some to replace what they took. Is that how this thing is going to be? Or ...just what is the procedure here. I don't have many cuttings of good stuff left to take this year, and not sure people here want the common stuff. So what keeps it so everyone gets something they really want? I am confused on these round robin things.

Marcy --We will each have a person to send to and one that will send tous...Last time it was what ever you wanted to send---a plant ,cutting, what ever you may have extra that you want to send to your NewHoya Buddy...............

Long Beach, CA

Oh....I see....just like we did it HERE last time. I think that is more of an "exchange" rather than a "round robin" type of trading.
Well, I like it that way better, so you can count me in too.

Will the drawing of names be separated by countries of residence or will all names be dumped into the same pot for drawing?

Priest River, ID

I think we should just take are chances with our friends out side the states...I would like to keep this with just our hoya group and friends ---it is hard to exchange hoyas with people that have not been collecting as we all have..............Sure hope I am making sence ,I do not want to hurt any feelings...Please let me know what you all think !! If you are out of the states and want to trade within your country let me know......Any ideas let me know............Sandy

Sandy,
I read your message several times, but still did not understand it. To the point of being blunt, here is how I feel. It would be my preference to draw the name of a person living in the USA because of a difficult situation shipping to Canada in the 2005 secret exchange. My package was confiscated by Canadian Customs. The other person never received any hoyas. The package was returned to me with dead plants.

I would like to participate, but only on the condition that I could ship to someone living in the USA. Of course, there is no guarantee that would happen in a random drawing unless the names were presorted by countries prior to drawing.

Perhaps a poll or survey to gauge how others feel on this issue would be beneficial.

Prescott, AZ

Ah yes, I was going to say lets put everyone in one hat and draw so everyone is included, as long as they understand the box may be confiscated by custome. Oh I remember now you didn't receive your cuttings... Hmmm maybe we should all vote??? And I think if I understand Sandys post, is to limit it to the hoya forum so that we are all receiving hoya's. Instead of someone who doesn't collect hoya wanting to jump in and send a Iris instead of a hoya. Is this correct Sandy?

Ottawa, ON

I'd be interested but I live in Canada and I wouldn't want to see any innocent plants suffer. :( And I only have my one hoya right now! But I hope everyone that is involved will update this thread so I can live vicariously through you!

Even tho the best case scenario would be to have us all in one hat, perhaps we can just make sure there is a Canadian Hoya Buddy for any Canadian hoya lovers who want to play(???)

We all know several, I bet we can "draft" some buddies to pair everyone up and ease the "customs blues". Canada seems to be getting a taddy prickly where imports are concerned. Perhaps they're just looking at packages more carefully now ........as ALL countries should be doing...........considering what just happened between the U.S. and England! There's a "YIKES" factor.

Between us friends we can find a way to make this work.

Cicada, hopefully this could be a solution...

Perhaps people could let Sandy know if they are not comfortable trading with someone outside the US, and Sandy could make a note of that next to the name that goes in the hat.

Sandy could write down all the names of those on the forum (including outside the US), and put them into a hat and draw names for us.

If there are people who feel uncomfortable sending outside the US, and Sandy draws the name of someone from outside the US for that person, she could just put the name back in the hat and draw again until she gets someone in the US.

This way everyone trades within their comfort zone without having Sandy deal with a lot of stuff.

Also, I agree with Sandy that this needs to be kept "in-house" - i.e. hoya for hoya trade. This ensures we are all trading hoyas, so no one gets disappointed.

Just a thought :-)

I have sent cuttings about 6 times to Canada and had no problem...............It is all in how you send them...So if you do not want to go out of the states let me know ....Anyone in Canada that wants to stay in Canada let me know---the same with Sweden, let me know how youy want to handle it..........I for one will trade with anyone and take my chances..Sandyc

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

A suggestion: if you send a box to Canada...try not to mark it PLANTS!!! HAHAHA.

In making out the Customs Declaration, Fake Plant Decorations work...also Plastic flower Decorations.... Sometimes I think a clip or something that rattles around makes it seem impossible to be plants....

Just a thought. If some people simply don't want to send to Canada and take the risk...so be it. There is also a chance that any of our boxes to the next state be lost, too.

Carol

Victoria BC, Canada(Zone 9a)

Cout me in!! I am in Canada however this gets worked out I will send to where ever. I have had lots of cuttings come through but they were marked as garden decor:) Once one was sent back which is a disappointment. That's life as they say.
If it turns out via vote or whatever I would be happy to organize it if enough are interested here in Canada.

Bea

Walhalla, SC(Zone 7a)

What ever everyone decides is fine with me, I can try and ship to anywhere! I have sent some to canada with no problem, it must be the luck of the draw :)
Count me in!
Jaimee

What happens if you mark it one thing, & then they open it to find the plants? Do you get a fine or do they just send it back?
Marcy

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

Marcy,
I was not fined, but there was an official paper from Customs in the returned package. I am simply not comfortable submitting a customs form listing the package contents as one thing when it is entirely something else. Besides the issue of ethics involved, there is also the danger of introducing invisible pathogens through plant tissue which could have long term effects on the environment.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I know someone who uses a fake name/return address and sends it from another Post Office!!!

Seems to me that last time it was worked out...wasn't it?

Carol

You're right Carol. The Canadian person who didn't get her cuttings from the US had other DGers within Canada send her cuttings, so it worked out fine.
Christine
