White linear spots on leaves

Valencia, PA(Zone 5b)

My plant has just developed quite a few buds and I am getting excited about it blooming. However today, I found two leaves with white linear spots about 1/4" long on two of the leaves and a few of the smaller buds are turning yellow and falling off. Any idea what these spots can be from? Thanks, Karen (liebran) --I'll try to get a picture tomorrow.

Here are the white spots, any ideas would be appreciated. Karen

And here is something else making lacelike holes in some of the bottom leaves. Some of these "critters" are making the newly formed buds turn yellow and fall off. Karen

Just a guess here but I think it might be some sort of leaf miner. I would remove all the leaves with damage or markings and watch that plant carefully.

Hi Karen,
What you have appears to me damage from sawfly larvae. The tiny worms feed on the leaves between the veins thus leaving the lace appearance. These are typical pest of Hibs. I've had the same problem this year too. The best way to confirm this is to examine the underside of the leaf and see if you notice the tiny greenish worms. You can kill them by wiping the leaf with a napkin. This will also remove the eggs which will hatch later. Or if the infestation is bad just cut off the infected leaves and dispose of them away from your plants. For me I just go out on a regular basis to see if they are eating any leaves and remove them.Your plants will survive the attack even if you cut off some leaves. Keeping the pest under control though will help reduce the population next season.

Another poster here on DG had the same problem.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. YES that is what I am seeing. I just noted the small green larva today. I'll get more insecticidal soap. I am going to get rid of the leaves that are bad. The info says that they cocoon at the base of the plant--does the same insecticide work there? The dear plant is just ready to bloom, too. Would they cause the smaller buds to yellow and fall off or is that some other problem-my husband thinks it may need more water since we are in a drought. One of the references mentioned Spinasad-anyone know what insecticide contains that? One more question (sorry, but I'm new at this), are they causing those white spots on the other 2 leaves, or is that something else? Today I found them on one rose leaf, also. Thank you so much again, Karen (the bewildered)
