These little cuties are eating my canna lillies! They are right down in the new leaves where they twist around when they are unfolding. Making a terrible, terrible mess. I have been spraying a mixture of soap, rubbing alcohol and dog flea soap right down in there and they come scrambling out but I have to do it every other day. I don't know what else to do, I've tried everything so any suggestions would be welcome.

Halfway House, PA

The earwigs were first seen when I lived in Havertown, PA back in the early to mid 70's. It was believed that they were brought in via the new telephone poles that were replacing the old. There was a little metal hardware about 3-4 ft above ground on the telephone poll and the neighborhood kids were hitting it with stones and the earwigs started dropping out from behind the metal hardware. Each year since then, earwigs just populated the area. Now I live up in New Hanover Twp, PA, about 30 miles north, and I am seeing the earwigs, although not nearly as many. I too was bitten by an earwig as a child and yes it hurts. I've always wondered if these bugs were checked out by the health department or CDC for any health problems from their bite.
I don't use chemicals of any kind, so I won't be killing them off. If they seem to increase in numbers, then I will consider other methods such as the idea of drowning them. I've also seen the longer body version which I always thought was a deformity. Now I know better. Correction: My location is not Halfway House, PA it is New Hanover Twp., Gilbertsville area, PA
