CLOSED: Red Sun Sunflower, Helenium 'Moorheim Beauty', Fig Hollyhock

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

9/5 (Information also posted on today's date)
Well, hey...this is open again!
I harvested the sunflower and hollyhock seed, and followed directions as best I could. I have 10 trades of each. NO HELENIUM, because I want to keep it blooming for as long as possible, not go to seed, and because the Plant Files note on prop. of it doesn't suggest via seed.

So, wcgypsy, cegoins, and rwmedic, froggie42 you're on, if you want them! ce, your sasbe is packed and waiting to ride. The sunnies made yellow, orange, and red flowers, and I put each color into different little zips. LMK if you want the seeds via dmail.

I really want seeds for GIGANTIC sunflowers and unusual sunflowers.

I can be tempted by anything purple, neon pinks, and reds: zinnias, snapdragons, other easy purple, red, fuschia colored annuals. Any easy cut flower....

Here is the Red 'Red Sun" Sunflower - it's about 8-9' tall.

Here is the Yellow of the same sunflower. I purchased the seeds from chickenbones on ebay. The yellow are over 10' tall. These have been flowering for about a month now. I started them in pots and transplanted them. They look like they are producing more flowers on down the stems.

Here is the Helenium 'Moorheim Beauty.' This was one of the plants I purchased through the NWBulb coop Pixiedish hosted. I love it!

I don't know the name of this hollyhock, but I'm pretty sure it's a figleaf type. I kept seeds from a plant I had in Janesville, WI in 2003, and finally was able to plant them last spring. Here is one of them in bloom. Very sweet.

Almost forgot to write what I would like. These seeds will be available in September, from the flowers you see.

I would like more sunflowers, particularly Velvet Queen, Ruby Eclipse, Moonwalker, White Italian, well, anything interesting and especially GIGANTIC! :-)

I'd also like some CA poppy seeds....and tempt me with anything PURPLE....

I'm also happy to share for SASBE.

Thanks soo much Connie

:-)
Please remember that the seeds aren't ready yet, so I'll hold on to your envelope until they are. Thank you!

Weeping Water, NE

I love your red sunflowers, is it true they bloom facing east? If you have any left I would really enjoy some.

Riverton, UT(Zone 6a)

Do you have any of your red sunflower seeds left? They are beautiful. Lesh

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Paws - your hollyhock is Zebrinus - mine is insatiable. Janesville soil is sterile and I doubt your seeds are good. LOL
I've got a lot of helenium, but I don't save the seeds - do you want some?

Al

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I do Al, if they aren't hybrids--I'll send ya postage....I think I'm good for it huh?

By the way my soil is sterile too--ancient Indian burial grounds here--LOL
At least it must be as far as echie's go...got a couple of sparklers doing great in the shade and some seedlings of magnus (sheer desperation here) also surviving quite nicely in the complete shade of the patio!
Deb

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I'm working on your seed pile, had cut some Ruby Giant and remembered those are clones and no good anyway so I'll start dumping helenium and Double Click in buckets for ya' hon.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

You are just spoilin' me rotten Al...

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

bigcityal, I have no idea what you mean by Janesville soil being sterie, nor do I understand what you mean by yours being "insatiable." I live in Hoopa, CA now, and the seeds I brought from Janesville three years ago produced the plants with flowers (and many more, that I've shared with friends here) that I've pictured, so if those produced these plants, why wouldn't these seeds produce more plants? I guess the LOL means it's a joke, but I'm dense, so please explain.

Anyone who wants to change their mind about the seeds, no problem, and feel free to get seeds from bigcityal, since he has the helenium as well.

As it happened, a large limb fell from a tree near the sunnies, and it sheared two of them off. I still have more. I was happy that though it also landed on the hollyhocks, none were damaged. The fence took the worst of it.

Both of the sunflowers that broke were yellow.
How many seeds is a good number to send? I think I purchased 20 originally, and all grew, though now, with the help of dogs, friends, and now a big limb, I'm down to only 6! Still, there should be lots of seeds. However, I really would like to hold out for some other sunflower varieties before I promise more for postage...I hope that's ok. :-)

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Hi Paws - I've talked to you a little before about you living in Janesville before and my brother living there now - it's fine don't worry.
My zebrinus grew a lot in it's first year - more than I expected, but hundreds of flowers I would guess - really nice.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

I remember, bigcityal! That's why I didn't get it :-) Thanks for identifying my hollyhock.

Actually, everyone, I just went back and read the first paragraph of the trading primer. I've traded plants, but not seeds. It makes perfect sense, and why I didn't do it...well...common sense is the first one lost, as someone posted on another thread. (Let's just say my CS was on vacation or buried under the excitement of sharing and trading these great -to me-plants!)

Quoted:
"Don't trade seed you picked today, let alone seed you haven't picked yet! Too many things ... birds, bugs, drought, and flood can wipe out your seeds. Seeds should be thoroughly dried before you package and send them. (This also gives any bug infestations a chance to show up before you send seeds to an unsuspecting trader. It's not pleasant to open a package of seeds and find squirming things in the envelope.)"
http://davesgarden.com/trading/primer/2//

Well, DUH! What have I done?! Exactly that. So, if you have kindly fulfilled your end of an agreed on trade with me by sending seed or postage, please know that one way or another, you will get seed from me. Two friends are growing the same plants, so one of us will get seed. AND, when I have seeds for sure, I'll dmail all you who asked here to get seeds to you.

Please forgive my over-zealousness. :-)
Laura

I've closed this because the seeds are not ready.

Also, this offer is only for paid members. Another dumb mistake...I thought this was only viewable by members.

I'll do better next time.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey, I know this is closed, but I tend to resent authority figures. I have been really wanting some Helenium - my sister's name is Helen but I rarely get to see her since she lives in Italy. Anyway, if anyone has RED or orange Helenium, either seeds or plants, I'll trade anything I've got.

xxxxx, Carrie

Carrie, I am soooooo happy to trade when they are ready!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

4paws,
Please don't feel that you have to send seed if you run short. I would have been happy to share the rudbeckia without a trade, no problem. I have a bunch. Ain't it a kick? You think, "What could possibly happen to my seed?", and a tree falls on them! I likewise did not know that non-paying members could post and trade for seed...thought they couldn't post at all. Perhaps that's why some people I sent seed to were not in the addy exchange. I'll have to be more observant about that. I stumbled onto "garden web" and it looked interesting. I'm collecting salvia and they have a salvia forum, so I registered and after checking out the salvia forum, I took a look at their seed trading forum and the first one I saw was very unpleasant and almost threatening. Someone else must have dealt with this guy because I saw a post somewhere about their experience with him and how bad it was. It opened my eyes to a bunch of things I wouldn't have expected from gardeners just trading seeds!! Such as those who don't subscribe and use phony names and e-mail addresses to get seeds and lie and all kinds of wierd things. Totally turned me off to garden web, decided not to go back there......There's no place like Dave's.

4paws,
Same here if you are short on seeds Please by all means keep them for trade.... Only send to me if you have them. I am sure that I will find some again or that you will have some at a later date. Always trade before you send me.

Thanks
Beck

Sherry,
Repeat three times, and click your heels together: THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE DAVES, THER.... you get the idea.

LOL
Very nice folks, indeed.
But dig this, the sunnies that got sheered are growing more flowers further down the stems!

I really thing there will be plenty of seeds, but better not say that too loud or arrogantly! :-)

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

carrielamont,
See, now I was gonna say that!! Then I thought no one would get what I mean and I would just sound wierd....sometimes it's better to keep my mouth closed...it's so much harder to get my foot in then.

hi alesha, after I went through and posted, I saw you there and missc, another person that I missed. Would you dmail me your address? I only have sunnies and hollyhock, no helenium.

Do you have a photo of the 4 o'clocks? I don't even know what they look like. I'm not interested in hollyhocks, except this malva type, thank you. But I'm sure I'll have plenty of seed for trade.

Lonoke, AR(Zone 7b)

Hi 4paws, I would love to trade. If you're interested , let me know and I'll dmail you my list of seeds!

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

I have big red zinnias to trade for your sunflowers. Janetlee50

Weeping Water, NE

Hi 4paws, I am so very new to all of this. The only thing I have collected that I could possibly trade with you are some Castor Beans...not very pink, purple or red is it? I also have some seeds from my Peek-a-Boo (Spilanthes oleracea ) plant. They are yellow but oh so darn cute! If either of these peeks your interest, I would love to stick them in the mail to trade you for some of those beautiful red sunflower seeds.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

4paws,
Hi there, I have some purple zinnias and would like to trade for some of your hollylock seed if you have any left. Love the country where you live,it's beautiful. We worked up there one year.....Lauri

Hi again,
bigcityal says the helenium will grow from seed, so I'm waiting on that to send any more out, and will send them to those I've already mailed to. Hope that's ok...

I'm sure making this complicated, eh?
sorry.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi all...an update.
I'm heading home today (gone for a week and it feels like forever!). I left seeds drying and expect to send everyone who sent me sase or seeds, or asked for seeds, their seeds by the end of the coming week or early the next, unless I get home to find something terrible has happened to them. I've got them in paper bags, so they should be ok. Mostly the helenium weren't ready when I left, but the sunnies and hollyhock are good to go.

Thanks for your requests, sharing, and patience.
:-)

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi - I think I sent all the seeds that were promised 10/2. If there is anyone I missed, just dmail me with your address, and I'll get them out. I have seeds for everything. :-)

MissC and carrielamont - I might have missed you. Let me know. :-)
