Let's talk corn!

Cleveland, GA(Zone 7a)

Here in Georgia we are suffering a terrible drought. I see many people's gardens with short, withering brown cornstalks. I have been fairly fortunate that mine aren't dead, and are producing ears of corn. I picked about 3 dozen ears yesterday, and about 1/3 of them were actually dry and shriveled inside the husk. The others were nicely formed but had some kind of brown rot at the very tip. I thought maybe some bugs had eluded my 7 Dust and I just cut off the tips before I served them. When I was at the grocery store last night I looked at their corn, and they were puny and all the tips had been cut off! What is up with that? Is the drought causing some kind of corn tip rot?

I don't think we have many corn growers at Daves garden. Anyhow it is probably a combination of drought and heat. It has been a rough year for corn, Mine burned out by the middle of July. While there are insects other than earworms which attack corn, your symptoms may simply be arrested cob development due to the combination of heat and drought.

Well, since we are talking corn, what's up with the kernals growing on the leaves???

This is my first time growing corn. I was afraid it wouldn't pollinate since I have such a small area for it, but someone gave me some seeds, so I decided to go for it! I made 5 3' rows and it seems to have worked. I have about a dozen ears out there!

How cute are these babies?!? I am excited beyond words!

I call it my corn plot. 1st time in about 6 yrs. I ve grown corn. I sectioned it into 4 parts. so that equaled 4 rows by about 4 or 5 ft. long.and it worked pretty good for the seed that did germinate. I was just surprised to see multipe ears on the stalks. I'll do that again next year. I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Me, too! I really wasn't expecting anything. In fact, I had no idea what it was supposed to look like when it germinated. A friend told me "it looks like fat grass", so I was afraid to weed. Now it's a jungle in there! LOL! I will know better for next year and it won't have to compete with weed central! I'm going to cover the entire area with cardboard for the aff season to kill off the weeds, then we'll till it and amend the soil a tad and see if we can have a real corn patch! (It was actually supposed to be my melon patch, but when I got these seeds, the melons went by the wayside!)

melon is good but corn on the cob is better. I just live to experiment. That makes gardening more fun!

I have to do more amend to the soil also and work on the weeds. All that watering made the weeds grow good.

Corn is great and melons are gooder!! LOL

I just finished up #4 planting and #5 is almost ready and #6 is pollinating...shake the stalks and let the dust fly to assist good pollination. #7 tassels are starting to show a bit.

The corn has been excellent plus this year,...usually is here in the corn belt.

A produce farmer in my area has the contract to provide all the sweet corn for the Indiana State Fair which starts this week.
