Is it suppose to be a variegated brug? cause it's variegated all over, even the parts that don't have broad mites, this plant has been cursed for 2 months now, I can't shake those buggers off. Do you think that's why the leaves look so variegated?

What's going on with Sunray
kathy_ann,
When some of my Brugs had broadmites early in the spring, the leaves became very thick, curled back and contorted. I do know that some viruses will produce variegation in some plants. Certain nutrient deficiencies will also cause spotty yellowing. I hope someone with more Brug experience will come along.
As far as I know, Sunray is not variegated.
I have no clue what is wrong with it, Kathy but let me tell you what happened to me last year. I had a brug that looked like it had broad mites with deformed new leaves. I treated it for a couple of months but it just got worse. Then its neighbor came down with the same symptoms and I knew it had to go and go fast.
I started doing web searhes and after looking at many pictures I decided I had a mosaic virus. I was so dumb to keep it around so long. Thankfully I have not seen it on any of my other plants.
Mottled leaves are a sign of virus too as Veronica told you. There are so many viruses out there. You can try to treat it with micronutrients and hope it is from lack of one of those, or you can cut your losses and get rid of it in case it is contagious.
Sunray is not a rare brug or a special seedling you grew, so I would not mess around with it anymore if it were mine. And even if it is from mites, it seems like they must be very resistant for I assume you have used a lot of miticides on it. Why worry over it any more?
I know it is hard if you have grown fond of it. So sorry!

LOL Kathy_Ann, I was just thinking as I was over on the hibiscus forum, that maybe you have a Sunray variegated sport there and it is very special and it is not diseased at all. Was it splotched like that when you got it?
LOL, I don't think it was, I think something is wrong with it, cause some leaves are solid and some are spotted, and it';s not a variegated leaf, it's more spotted, Like maybe your right.
I'll put it way away from the others. till I can find out for sure.
It's not a special brug but I'd like to replace it if I have to dump it.
YOu know, I really don't remember, but I don't think it was like tht, I got it as cuttings and it leafed out just fine and green when it was younger. somewhere down the line LOL
I'm gonna look up that mosaic virus and see what comes up
thanks kell for the help
kathy
I do not know if you can ever find out for sure unless you have a place you can send a piece of it for testing. The more I learn, the more I see how many wierd things are out there. It is a miracle more things do not pop up on our plants.
And some viruses only show when the plant is stressed and then recede from view when the plant is in a good state. I had a few sangs like that, they would get so mottled and ugly in the heat and look great in the fall.
The toruble is, all it takes is a bug to go from a disease brug to a healthy one and with 1 bite on each, spread the disease.
Good Luck! I kind of was hoping you had a rare sport.
yes sure can tell the difference, can't figure out what's going on, I really think the mites may have something to do with it. No other brug has this condition, they are all healthy dispite the nasty l05 degree weather we've had.
You know, I have taken cuttings off my sunray, and they turned out fine, leaves are green, I'll have to see if I have any left of them, I onlly took a couple.

Kathy, my sunray came out of the house this spring looking pretty bad..it kept having curled edges and all the new leaves coming out other then a few are the same way..Im thinking it has a virus too..its not one of my favorite brugs but like you, you hate to let it go..I think this one is heading to the other side of the house and let die a slow death..I just cant throw them away...lolol...maybe its just not the year of the sunray..Judy
