yes you are correct. Wow what a beauty and I believe a rariety for Oregon. Range is supposed to be Eastern Calif, east to Colorodo, Nevada, New Mexico, and Mexico

hmmm also found in Ken Kaufmans book a Great Spangled Fritillary dark female that looks like it too. If you see it again try to get a pic of the underside of the wings

Gold Hill, OR(Zone 7a)

The pictures of Great Spangled Fritillary dark female that I saw didn't seem to be as defined where the black meets the white on the wings and if you look close there is a white spot on the very end of the body. I did not see that in the pics of the GSF, but I am far from an expert. 'IF' I see it again I will try to get a pic of the underside, tried to last time but the butterfly was not cooperating. ;)

Thnkas for your help

pretty butterflies....I have some fluttering by my garden but I wasnt ready at all to take pixs. There were for couple of days a hummingbird hovering over my Zinnias. My son wasn't too quick enough to get a picture. Maybe from now on we will have our cameras ready for any visitor ...
