Need to separate some orange Clivia and looking for some interesting trades. Also have some pink Plumeria that I need to prune and also looking for some interesting trades. Since these are heavy, would prefer a Southern California local trade.
Also need to separate many Iris to separate. Which part of the grouping do I keep and which do I dig and throw?
Clivia, Plumeria and Iris
Ginny,
Here is where I learned what to keep and what to toss on Iris from weegy12's webpage
Growing Iris
When:
For best results, plant iris in July, August or September. In areas with hot summers and mild winters, (like here in California), September or October planting would be fine but it's important that they be well established before the growing season ends.
Where:
Iris need a sunny location with at least a half day of sun. They need good drainage either on a slope or in a raised bed, although soil that drains well would be fine without a slope. Iris don't like wet feet.
Depth:
A common mistake is to plant iris too deep. In light textured soil, cover the rhizome (bulb) with 1" or 2" of soil, in heavier soil let the top of the rhizome be exposed to the air. They like to breathe. Planting too deeply makes the rhizome more susceptible to rot.
Care:
Iris are easy to care for and are pretty drought tolerant. After they have been planted and set, water thoroughly. About 1" of water a week, unless rain falls, should be plenty to help the iris get established. After they are established, iris don't need much water.
Thinning Clumps:
Every 3 to 4 years, it's a good idea to thin the clumps to prevent overcrowding. if iris become to crowded, the blooms will suffer. Dig up the entire clump, and remove and replant the large new rhizomes with the leaf fans, by breaking them off of the old spent rhizome. Old spent rhizomes will not bloom again, however they can be replanted to get more increases.
General Garden Care :
Keep your iris beds clean and free of weeds allowing the tops of the rhizomes to sun bathe. Bloom stems should be cut off or broke off close to the ground after they finish blooming. Healthy green leaves should be left along, but brown leaves should be removed
Oh! and if you have extra just send them my way.LOL
