I want a Y

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

I am new to Brugs. Never heard of them until I joined DG a couple of months ago. I only have one and I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help my brug Y and bloom? Also I have noticed in the pictures on this forum that sometimes the leaves have pointy scallops on them and sometimes they are just smooth. On the same plant. None of mine are pointy...at least I dont think so. I have another plant that was given to my husband last year. He did not know what it was but the guy that gave it to him said it could get big and that it had real pretty flowers. Well we put it in a pot and set it in part shade. I didn't pay much attention to it cause it didn't bloom and it wasn't all that attractive. Left it out all winter and then in spring it came back out and is bigger than it was last year. I am thinking that it may be a brug or a datura. The leaves are a little different from the brug I purchased from a nursery, but the stem (trunk?) it pretty much identical. We planted it in the ground close to my other one. Can anyone tell me how to tell a brug from a dataura from the foliage?

I also would like instructions on taking cuttings in case mine doesn't make the winter. It is in ground and I really don't want to dig it up. Doesn't that disturb the roots? I have read that a lot of people do that, and I will if I have to but I am hoping to leave ita in the ground. I will mulch and do what ever I need to do.

Well there are lots of "seasoned" Brug growers & someone will come along & give you expert advice. I have only been growing brugs for a few years & my observations are as follows...different Brugs have different leaves, some have smooth neary shiny leave & some have fuzzy leaves some have serration & some do not, it varies from plant type to plant type.
I live in zone 7 & I dig my Brugs up that are planted in the ground, every fall & bring them into someplace they won't freeze, I built a new green house but you can even use a closet. I tried leaving some out but they did not make it.
Digging them up doesn't hurt them as long as you dig out far enough that you don't cut any real major roots. I left a lot of mine in the pots & just buried the pots in the ground. I repot in the spring to one size larger.
It does seem like it takes forever for that first "Y" & it's even hard to spot until you have actually seen one. The plant that was a gift, if it stayed out all winter & came back it's likely a Brug & not a Datura, Datura are usually annuals, although I have had them come back but they never seem to get very big. You can go back & read some of the older posts & get an idea of what you should do for your area. I know what you mean about not getting one until you came to DG. I did the same thing now I have nearly 119 plants growing!
Careful it's addicting! Oh & welcome! Bj

Gosh 119 brugs, you are an addict Bj! LOL.

I agree with Bj, sounds like you have 2 brugs there. I have come to the conclusion that if you feed, water and have your brug in good shape, blooming then depends on an internal clock. Some seem to bloom sooner than others. And some take forever. The only thing I have noticed to speed it up if you are already taking good care of your brug, is Messenger. I notice it also speeds up flowering on other plants. The worst is if you spray your coleus. They will suddenly all bloom even if little!

PS: Good Luck. Waiting is so hard.

I don't know where to find Messinger. I know I can probably order it on the internet, but I really would like to buy it at a store like today already!!! Like NOW. Looks like I'm in trouble , huh? Patience is not one of my virtues. LOL

I don't know if stores carry it, but a friend of mine ordered there's direct from the company and had it in 3 days. Eden Bioscience is the manufacturer.

They are VERY fast with their shipping!! I ordered mine on a Monday, and got it in the mail on Wednesday.
Ok, I have "Y's," on 3 baby brugs but no blooms yet. Tiny buds that have been there forever, but don't get any bigger because my baby brugs are still too small? Or it's too hot? Or they are just not in the mood?

So that is what is happing to my cloeus. The cloeus are under the brugs. Some days you can't win. Joan
