Tech Turf

Aubrey, TX

Have any of ya'll tried Texas Tech grasses? Tech Turf for sun or Sadow Turf for shade? Our yard is sugar sand and very shady. St Augistine is the only thing I've seen that does well here, but it is so fussy and needs too much water.

Tracy....is it like astro-turf? Synthetic?

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

I think this is what they are talking about.

Oh,,,,lol, Buffalo grass!
Sorry Tracy, the tech part made me think it was fake;)

I'm interested as I have been trying to get fescue established in the front for four years. Our weather has squelched reseeding for better coverage, and I certainly don't want to go with St. Augustine, which we have in the back. We're a Tech family, so I knew what Tech Turf had to be. lol

I'd be interested in hearing more on this subject....

The shadow turf is what I really want to find out about. Not many plants of any kind are happy in the dry shade.

Hico, TX(Zone 8a)

Actually, a great option for super dry shade that looks like grass, is evergreen and can be mowed is a native sedge. Mine is still green and can't remember when it rained last - rains all around us, but not on my dirt. Maybe tomorrow?

Aubrey, TX

I see lots of sedge listed, but not "native sedge". Can you tell me more?

Hico, TX(Zone 8a)

Carex texensis is the only one that I have found commercially sold in TX. Carex perdentata (TX Hill Country sedge) is listed several times as a great lawn sedge in books and other media. It is commercially sold in CA nurseries that cannot ship to TX (weird).

Carex texensis is also supposed to be a great lawn sedge. You can get it through Sweet Briar Nursery and Gardens in Belton TX http://www.vvm.com/~reid/gcovers2.html

If they only sell wholesale, you can get it through a landscaper. There is another nursery that sells it wholesale, but I must have thrown out the info due to the fact they were much higher priced.

I do not know which sedges I have on my place. Someday I would like to know.

LOL we are a texas tech family too...i did my undergrad/grad work there....; hubby has worked and played there for 20 yrs....but when i read the title of the thread i thought you were talking about the new astroturf tech was getting and the old turf that they were selling to interested people.... my hubby was one....he bought the end zone portion that was red and black so that they could put on their tail gate parties floor........

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Sticks, my younger son will be so envous when I tell him about the red and black piece of the end zone! I'll tell him to look for "the" tailgate party! He and DDIL are moving to Dallas from Lubbock next month, but do you think they are giving up their season tickets? Ha! Guess it would be hard to fly back to Lubbock with a piece of end zone rolled up under your arm though. DH, I, and both sons attended Tech for first degrees, and my mom got her master's there. Add a niece, nephew, and a bunch of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm interested! I put in a lawn (small area) of St. A about 2 months ago and as soon as it was ready for the first mowing I started noticing "crop circles" on it! No one can see if it's chinch bugs or what. I'm ready to tear it out and plant something...perhaps this Tech Turf???!
Someone said to mix Tide with water and just saturate the yard with it....anyone heard of this?

Connie, to see if it is chinch bugs you can cut the bottom and top off of a coffee can, twist it in the ground a little. Fill it with water for about 10 minutes and the chinch bugs will float to the top. Then you'll know if it's those bugs or something else like SAD or Brown patch.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

When I took Horticulture 101 at Texas Tech the main emphasis was the care and feeding of tumbleweeds, baregrass and how to prune a Mesquite bush to get wood for Bar BQ!!! Real handy for future tailgaters.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)
