Who is living in my yard??

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Something has been living here for atleast 6 years. We don't know what it is but one year DH put his arm in and could not feel the end. He could feel the bottom of the iris ryzhomes. He tried to stick in a yard stick and felt no end. We don't know how much deeper than that it went. I don't rememberasking him, but I think it runs
under the surface and doesn't go very deep.

One year I dumped plant pots with dirt and styrofoam peanut in the hole and back they came and dug it out.
Last year DH piled or bags of leaves and junk the roofers left on the ground over there. It did not appeared anyone still lived there. Whe I dumped them in the compost pile in March I saw the indent from the hole. Just 1 week ago I noticed it is dug back out again. Below is a picture.

Over the years it has been there none and (we have had 3) of our dogs have ever messed over there, never barked at the hole, nothing. That seems really weird to me. Even Princess our Doxie now growls and barks hatefully at those huge grasshoppers but not this den.

Could it be an armadillo? I don't care. It doesn't hurt anything. I am just curious "Whose been sleeping in my yard"

You know, I have a mysterious hole in my yard that appears to be residential, but I can't seem it figure it out either. The hole is under a pine tree root. If I cover it, it reappears. I never see anything entering or leaving, nor does my dog (also a Doxie) bark at it. Weird...........

You DH was much braver than I would have been by sticking his arm in there! LOL! I guess since it was large enough for his arm it is fairly wide? What is the diameter? Maybe you should try sitting up a video cam on that one! Hey I have an idea, sprinkle flour around the hole and see if you can see a footprint.

I got one of these in a flower bed where there is a hickory stump. Even in the fresh dirt, no tracks. The dog pack doesn't bark. An educated guess is an armadillo. They ramble and come thru during armadillo season. This is probably a summer camphouse.

I have one almost that big beside a tree......it worried me for a long time until I looked in there at dusk (from a distance) and it was a huge toad. I

I also have one of these, in a shaded area by the air conditioner where the condenser drips water. Mine was a toad. I think it helped that we had an inground pond a few feet away and every year, among the water lilies, there were tons of eggs and little toads. It was great, but really clogged the filter up for a few weeks!

I measured the entrance it is 11 inches long by 6 inches wide. Would have to be a mighty big toad. I have had toads in holes and in plant pots but they were not this big. I don't have enough bugs to feed one this size. LOL

Did you try the flour idea? It doesn't have to be flour - anything to get a print. Then take a pic of the prints.

Do you live in town or in country? That helps, too.

Very scary sticking an arm in there! Not my idea of fun.

Here's the toad hole in my yard, it's about 5 inches across, I'm not as brave as you so I have no idea how deep it is.
The flour idea sounds good, or do you have any night goggles? lol

I did put out the flour just haven't been outside this morning. The mosquitoes are horrible. They are thicker than love bugs. Wish I could find my spray. I have a few plants to dig.

Will let you know if any marks in the flour. I could always fill the hole with water or try to But that seems cruel.

Fly_girl even with night goggles might be something I don't want to be that close when it comes out. LOL

If it is a huge toad he better get bust eating these mosquitoes. I don't care if they taste bad.I need to put my citronella out on the porch and in the garage to keep them away from the doors.

Be back later.

How did your flour experiment work out? Did you ever find out what had set up housekeeping?

I put down flour then it reained. I need to try it again.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
