In the photo forum (BC I don't know how to post a picture anywhere else) I have posted a picture of my chinese evergreen. The houseplant book I have says to propagate this plant "pot up basal shoots".
What's a basal shoot? I know this plant is in an oversized pot.. I didn't do that. This plant was given to me in much worse shape than it's in, and I was afraid to shock it more by repotting. So I left it go, and there are new leaves all over, it's just not very full.
Ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks
Jennifer
basal shoots?
Jennifer, Your aglaonema looks quite healthy. Do be sure to let the soil become quite dry before watering due to the excess soil that also looks a bit heavy. Also protect it from any direct sun.
Basal shoots are new stems that occasionally emerge from the soil at the base of the plant. It is much more common in a greenhouse environment than in the home, so don't hold you breath waiting for basal shoots.
The best way to propagate an aglaonema, outside of the greenhouse, is to take stem cuttings.

So Will, you don't think I should do much with it? I was considering making a "small one" from this one so I could add it to the pot.
As for watering, it doesn't hardly ever get watered 'cuz it's in such a big pot. :) Especially no direct sun,, you betcha!:)
Thank you Will!!

Your plant looks healthy and seems to be getting good care, so you certainly can take cuttings and plant them in the pot. If your cuttings root successfully, they will help fill out the plant.
