population control

Saint Louis, MO

This is my second summer as a pond owner. The koi pond came with the house when we bought it. All of a sudden, I have a ton of baby fish (mixture of koi and goldfish and something else?) in a very small pond. I mananged to scoop some out and sell them to a pet store, but I want to keep the population manageable in the future. Are there any predators I can add that will eat just the fish eggs and some of the baby fish? Any other suggestions for population control? I have a few frogs, but they're not very big.
Thanks for any advice.

I would get rid of all the goldfish- they breed like bunnies. As your koi make new babies, they will always be easy to find homes for, goldfish not so easy.

I agree with Azreno, get rid of all the goldfish and you are lucky you are able to sell them. Happy ponding!! Bellie

I concur. Get the goldfish out of there. After that, you'll have fewer babies. If you want no babies at all, you'll have to pick your fish according to their gender. You are lucky you can sell your babies to a pet store. I have been giving them away via Craigslist. You might check out www.craigslist.org and see if there is one for your area.

In case you don't like the suggestions of getting rid of your goldfish - here is another option: I have heard golden orfe's do an excellent job of eating fish eggs and small fry, yet they will not harm the larger goldfish. I plan to get a few next year. So far my 12 goldfish have not spawned. They are still pretty small so I'm hoping they don't this year (anyone know if that's realistic?) Golden orfe's are social, so it is recommended to get at least 3 of them. They also grow up to 2 feet, so this may not be a good option for a small pond.
