Do guineas get the same diseases as chickens? Anyone know? We tried to hatch our own chickens to try and minimize the risk of bringing things into our flock (who are all pets) and now I am considering putting a baby guinea in with my lone chick for company, but want to make sure it's safe.
Do any of you vaccinate, and if so, for what?
TIA!

guinea vs chicken diseases/vaccinations?
I'm sorry this hasn't been addressed. I do not know the answer to your question and I hope that someone that knows will reply. I have not vaccinated mine, but my first batch was wormed before they came here. When we get some rain and a cool off, I'm going to look in to what I should do with the babies that hatched here. I hesitate to do anything to the youngsters in this heat. Good luck!!!
Sorry, I also don't know. But you could try over at "The Classroom at the Coop"... really tons of poultry folks there. http://www.the-coop.org/cgi-bin/UBB/ultimatebb.cgi
Wow!! That is a good link, Zep, thanks!!! I hope I'll be able to find it when I need it...
the most important thing you can do is have them on the dirt so that they build up their own immunities. i've been hatching my own for many yrs now and have never had a problem with any diseases.
my coops are cement foundation but i open the hatch and fence off an area so they can walk around where the rest of the flock walk, and still be safe until they are large enough not to get pecked.
I'm glad to hear that 21, I let mine out of the coop with their mommas when ever the hens decide to take them. I have three hens and a roo that share the responsibility of 8 chicks. In the beginning, we put the babies on the ground only when we were there with them. But, that didn't last long - we finally decided that their 'family' wanted to take responsibility and they have done a good job. We left them alone and one day, we saw a couple of the bigger babies out, and all soon followed. I'm glad to know that we did the right thing even tho we just did what came naturally...
Raising babies are the same lol. Instinct! I love having babies. Last yr. I was up to 150 hens. about 50-75 roos. I sell the roosters dressed and frozen. Always remember when you hatch your own; I always got more roosters than hens about 6 to 1.
Hens make good mothers guinea do not. I choose the hen that gives me the most problems and give her the guinea eggs 28 days, chicken 21days. Guineas do not give up their mothers until they are almost full grown. It really is a lot of fun have these really big birds chasing their momma around. I love making my silkies raise them. They do make good mothers.
I show my birds so I do vaccinate
But for the backyard birds that are not exposed to other birds from lord knows where I see no reason to vaccinate
CC, thanks so much for this info. Unless Mop is offered a $$$ contract, I will not vaccinate, since he will remain in our own chicken yard. Hey, my 7 grands, human variety, are not vaccinated, nor were our children, except smallpox. But, if there was an outbreak, all would get the needle...
