First lily bloom!

Upton, MA(Zone 5b)

This week my first water lily in my first water garden bloomed! It's a tropical night bloomer, unfortunately I don't know the name as it wasn't on the pot when I bought it. It starts to open around 8 pm and closes up around 7 am. Had to get up early to take pictures :)

Very pretty color :) What are those lily pads with the "pie crust " edges? I just got 2 boxes of pond lilies! I will have them in pots and out in the pond early tomorrow morning :) It looks like the one box was used as a punching bag by the post office :( Both sides torn open and just bashed, I am so happy the lilies are alright, with the exception of a tiny one. I am quite sure it is a tropical. The name is lavender lace, anyone heard of that one before? Well, it is qite small and is broken into 3 pieces! As I said the box must have been thrown around quite a bit! The larger lilies were in wet newspaper and garbage bags and wound around like a water hose, so they are just fine :)

Wow, beautiful pond and beautiful lily.

How are you going to over winter the tropical lily? It is lovely.

Thanks all for the nice words!

Tootsie - the pie crust edged pads are from the tropical lily that's in bloom. I have no idea of the name though, there was no tag when I bought it. The pads are actually the reason I bought that lily, all the other lily's they had were the usual hardy variety and this one stood right out. Had to have it no matter what the cost! The hubby wasn't as happy with my "no matter what the cost" statement but paid the $42 anyway :)

darlindeb - from some research I've done online I think it will make it through the winter if I keep it in a 5 gallon bucket in the basement. I read that you wait until it goes into dormancy (the growth all dies back) and you remove all dead growth then place it in a water filled 5 gal bucket and keep in a dark warm place. I also read that you should stop fertilizing about a month before you have to bring it in. I just fertilized last weekend, so that's all that I'll do for the rest of the season. I'm hoping this plan works for a couple other plants I bought for the pond that are not hardy.

I looked at some pics, could yours be LAVENDER LACE?

Well E-gads, I just read what I posted, LOL I was sent a LAVENDER LACE water lily as a bonus!! I was thinking too that it was a tropical and not hardy for my zone. I have contacted the water lily lady that sent it to me and have requested some information as mine was in three pieces(small) when I find out something I will post here :)
