concrete livestock trough

Dallas, TX

I want to use concrete livestock trough in my garden in Dallas. Can anyone tell me where I might find a concrete livestock trough?

Try a farm supply store. They may be hard to find. Good luck. Post please when and where you find one. We need a large one to fit a spot of one that has started leaking at the barn.

Have a good day .

Mvrosa,
How big does it need to be? We live in a rural area...no shortage of livestock here. We have a dailey radio show where i could call in and ask for a trough, lmk. Have you looked at the hypertuffa forum, I bet you could make one.

I have been playing (reading) in that forum. I just LOVE some of the stuff they do... I would love to do some myself... especally make big rocks that don't weight 200#'s.

I read that hypertufa isn't good for holding water long-term. It leaches something. What I want to do is make a wading pool/waterfall/stream in and around which my kids (8 and 14, not likely to drown) could play. I want to let the stream come out of the side drainhole of the trough (I'm pretty sure there should be a hole in the side.) then use a pondless waterfall pump (I think that wold be the right thing.) to get the water back up to the trough. My daughter wants to make the stream part. We're also considering an outdoor shower head set above the trough. It's been really hot this summer. Does anyone know whether it would be necessary to chlorinate the water? That would interfere with plants in and around the stream, and we'd be putting the trough right in the midst of a bunch of shade perennials. I'd rather not chlorinate. That would also be nicer for visiting toads. I'm worried about how we'd keep birds out of the water. They make an awful mess of our dogs' water bowl.

Mmm. I'm not sure how big it should be. I'm not sure what the standard sizes are. 4' diameter circle? 3' x 6' rectangle? 3 to 3.5' deep?

When birds make a mess of the dogs water bowl it usually means they can't find enough water for themselves. (unless it is grackels) Once I put them out water under the trees, they left the cat dish alone out in the open.

You would probably have to clorinate. I have 2 fountains, one small in front garden and a large one in back. They both have birds at them frequently and both have continously pumped water. They both get algae in them and the grackles make the problem worse because they seem to dunk everything they eat before eating it. so there always seems to be bits of bread and stuff in there. I have a bird bath close by without circulating water and clean it daily, but they still foul the fountain. We use spa size, 1" diameter, stablilized chlorine tablets. In the summer about 2 a week in the large fountain and 1 a week in the smaller one. Even with all this, we have to drain and clean the large one 2 to 3 times a year. Both ours are concrete. Here's a pic of the one in the front garden.

and you have plants I recognize from our little part-sun area!

blue-black whatever-it-is and that other pretty one. My blue-black whatever-it-is has stopped blooming.

The birds in the dogs' water are indeed grackels.

Thanks for the chlorinating advice.

don't know what to tell you about grackles except move the food indoors. That is the only thing that worked at my moms house.

Hi - About the only item that would fit your size requirements
and is made of concrete is a cemetary vault. Perhaps you
might want to contact your local cemetary and ask about
costs.

I believe that concrete livestock troughs are either built in place,
or else they are no longer made today. At any rate, the cost to
move it would be prohibitive and would require heavy -lifting
machinery.

Rubbermaid makes a very large watering trough for cattle.
What about coating it with concrete on the inside - even the
outside, if it is to stand above ground. You could also do
mosaic tile?

Just a thought. Good luck.

mvroske - Is there a new site? That one does not work, and
very little other information is available on Google. Maybe he
went out of business?

The site wouldn't work for me in Mozilla, but it worked in Internet Explorer. It's just one page with rotating photos and a phone # - no e-mail. I guess I'll have to actually use my voice. Now I'm considering buying a "galvanized stock tank" (Gogle that and lots of relevant results appear.) and sinking it into the ground. I'm not sure how I'll then attach it to moving water (waterfall/stream). I must think more. The galvanized tanks are available round in many diametersand also ovular. I'm considering a 10 by 4 foot or 8 by 3 foot oval. If I got the smaller size, perhaps I could construct a screen hinged lid to keep birds out. I could grow a flowering ivy over the screen so it would look nice open or closed.

You might look at septic tanks if your still thinking of the cement route.
