Hello,
My friend gave me this hoya many years ago as a tiny plant. It took about 4 years before I finally got a bloom and it's been going strong ever since. I absolutely love this plant but wish I knew which kind of hoya it is. You can see some of the leaves are variegated, but there are also solid coloured leaves on this plant. Can anyone offer me any suggestions?
Thanks,
K

Hoya Indentity?
From your leaves and the flowers...it looks like you have H. carnosa 'Krimson Princess'....and a lovely plant it IS! Isn't the fragrance wonderful? How long have you had it....how long has it been blooming for you?
Carol
Hi Carol,
Thanks for your response. I absolutely love this plant. The fragrance is just sooo sweet! A lady at work told me she has a hoya too and that the smell is awful. I guess she must have a different kind.
I have had this plant for about 6 or 7 years. It first bloomed after about 4 years and after it had grown significantly. When my friend gave it to me it probably was a couple of inches tall with a coupl of leaves. I can't even guess how long it is now as I have it on a trellis in my kitchen. After it's first bloom it took quite a while for it to bloom again, maybe even a year. Now once all the blooms have dropped off, I see new blooms starting immediately. It has been this way for quite a few months now. It must be very happy. :)
K
K, it is clearly very happy - carnosas are so stingy with their blooms, so you are doing something right!
Ann
K, that is one pretty leaf on your plant! Krimson Princess is not usualy one of my favorites (yes there are one or two I don't have to have) but your leaves are white and not yellow. I dig it! Good growing! -joanne
Thanks everyone! I'm just so pleased with this hoya I'm going to have to look around for some more. They don't seem to be that common here in Ottawa but I'll keep my eyes open.
What are everyone's favourites and why?
K
Ann's Favorite Hoyas:
Hoya cv. Jennifer (that I got from Aloha Hoyas) because it's leaves are stunning and it blooms often (they smell like fine French perfume. And, it blooms over and over.
Hoya lacunosa (that I got from HD) because it blooms all the time and smells like a freshly-washed face.
Hoya tjadasmalanguensis (that I got from Aloha Hoyas) because it's leaves are big and beautiful and the blooms smell delicious - and it is in constant bloom.
Hoya fraterna (from Aloha Hoyas) because it's blooms are big and fuzzy and smell really good.
Hoya multiflora (from HD) because it is in constant bloom (no scent to the blooms, however).
Hoya erythrina (from Aloha Hoyas) because the leaves are beautiful and the blooms are an unusual color.
OK, I actually love all my hoyas but these are the ones that bloom a lot for me.
Ann
Omigosh K, I don't even know where to begin, but here are a few of my faves and why:
H. pubicalyx ALL of them. They grow well, the blooms last long and they like cooler temps! I have:
'Royal Hawaiian Purple' (from Robert Bedard)
'Reva' (from Robert Bedard)
'Splash' (eBay)
'Grey Lady' (eBay)
'Pink Silver' (hoya trade)
'sp. HSI 037' (hoya trade)
'Red Buttons' (secret garden rare plants)
'Bright One' (eBay)
of these 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' is my fave. Love the purple stems and the dark blooms.
H. macgillivraii (from Aloha Hoya) no blooms yet but LOVE how it's growing!
cv. Optimistic (from a forum member) beautiful fuzzy bright green leaves- grows GREAT!
cv. Ruthie (from the same forum member) same as above.
H. meliflua ssp. fraterna (from Aloha Hoya) the leaves are 10" long and it grows great!
H. Sussuela (from Aloha Hoya) BEST grower I have. Can't wait for blooms!
for smell I like H. pimentielana the best. It smells fresh, clean and a little like menthol.
Now, I have to stop of I will name them all. Those are my favorites because they grow great for me. I don't dislike any I have seen or heard of but these are good growers! -joanne
Hmmmm
I love H. bella, because she is just beautiful in a full bloom.
I love H. lacunosa, because she smells wonderful
H. heuschkeliana & H. DS-70 are in bloom year round and smell wonderful, and they are not to fussy.
I love them all, but if I had to choose just one I would keep H. bella.
Tami, the thought of only keeping one makes me want to throw up! I'll have to ponder this one a while............................. :~)
-joanne
I refuse to think of keeping just one! I would hack off as many vines as I could, stuff 'em in my pocket, and head for the hills! (lol)
Ann
Ann, I just bought a min-van last week and it has the stow-n-go seating. I think with careful planning we could get both yours and mine in if we have to head for the hills! I have some extra rebar, I think I coud make some hanging racks.................
HAHA - you guys are t oo funny. Just one? Pllllllease?
OK, Joanne. I'll spring for the gas.
:-)
Sounds like everyone loves this type of plant as much as I do. Now I'm going to have to make a list of everyone's favourites (yes I'm Canadian :) ) and go on a hunt for more hoyas here because I agree with all of you, I can't have just one now!
Kat
....and so the circle gets larger. :-)
Welcome to our addiction, Kat.
Marcy
Hey, we got another one eh Christine? LOL
Sandy (another Canadian addict)
Don makes three!
Come to think of it, I bet there is a whole wack of us Canadian Hoya ddicts lurking out there. Ü
Don
Don, you are right..we are closet hoya lovers up here in Canada!.....
Sandy
Hey...good new, I hope. I have recently sent BBIIGG shipments to 2 different folks in Canada - both in Quebec - who, I assume, are going to start up some kind of hoya sales....like 40 - 50 different species. So...stay tuned, Canada...Help is ON THE WAY!!!!
Oooh...that is awesome! Thanks AlohaHoya. I will have to keep on the lookout for them.
Thanks for the heads up. :)

That would be great if they set up businesses selling them. We certainly need more varieties available in Canada.
