Trillium vs. Paris

Cincinnati, OH

Half of Trilliaceae (Trillium family) is ignored in the US. How do they differ? Is there a reason?

Impatience. They are specialty plants and take their jolly time to perform and be showy. Smaller and older countries go for collectables more, (Interest in a small space) the space-rich US goes for big wads of obscenely showy mass-plantings that go bang-bang as soon as they are in the ground.

Think of it this way: What sort of trees are planted in a new neighborhood? Fast-growing, short-lived ones that fill the need. As they get old, they are replaced with long-lived specimen hardwoods that are seen in old neighborhoods.

Supply and demand. Give it a few years. Notice how Erythoniums are becoming more available? Ironic, though, as Trilliums are American!
