Active Desktop in Windows XP Pro

Active Desktop --- what is it? What does it do? I have had several error messages pop up indicating that the "active desktop" was turned off as a precautionary measure. The error message's accompanying "click here to turn active desktop back on" does not do anything. None of my Dummies and other XP reference books list "active desktop" or "desktop, active" in their topics indexes. Thanks.
