a bright spot for me.

Happy Happy Birthday Sheri from one transplanted New Yorker to another............
Deann
Happy Birthday!! I hope you get to really enjoy your special day!!
Brenda
Deann..have you discovered Phils Pizzaria in Middleville yet?
Regards,
sheri
Sheri
Where is Middlevile?? That sounds like a long way to go for good ole fashion New York Pizza.
Deann
Sheri - I get their calzones there- yum....
Deann
Ok. Middleville.
It is about 15 minutes south, a little bit south east of Grand
Rapids.
Yes, it is a long way to go for NY pizza, but there was a group
of government contractors here who had made it there quest
to find the best pizza in Michigan, and believe me they went to
hundreds of pizza places.
I called Phils (which is owned by a fellow named Russ Sclafano)
(who wound up in Middleville totally by accident), and they
answered the phone with a loud, "WHAT???!!".
I knew I had found a New york pizza place. I was home.
If you order a pizza there, ask for Sheri and Lous ny style,
thin, well done, extra cheese, garlic. Nothing else. oh yeah, there
is some sauce on it, but thats a given. No garbage pizza for a
new yawka! LOLOL. (pepperoni and ham hocks and cantaloupes and
ice cream). ugh.
the only thing that is missing is the real mutts. thats how you say
mozzerella cheese in pizza parlour. there is only the reduced fat,
reduced salt, semi real mozzerella. All the good, whole milk mutts
has been shipped to NY. Even in wisconsin, you can't find whole
milk mutts. and thats where its made. I almost shanghaid a
Sorrento truck I saw on Highway 80 heading East loaded to the
brim with cheese, I was blowing my horn and shaking my fist and
pointing to my mouth. The truck driver thought I was nuts. Hrmph.
Ok, I have spouted enough. I didn't mean to scare anyone.
Regards,
sheri
sheri.........
Thanks for the heads up on New Yawk style pizzaiola......I make a pretty good homemade version of it myself.....thin crust included....Sure miss the bakeries of new york....nothing like em.....and all of the ethnic food you can get. I laugh when I see a Cannoli on a menu.....what do they know how a good cannoli is made. Ya gotta go to Little Italy to Ferrara's. One of these years before I die, I am going back to Little Italy to the St. Gennaro's Festival. Pepper and sausage sandwiches....yummy.....
Nice going down Memory lane with you...
Deann
Phils has cannolis. they are great!
fresh and cold and crispy, creamy with choclate bits.
Pizza pie pans here are little!!!
I try to describe how you have to fold the tip in,then
fold up the sides to take a bite, and have the napkin on
your plate to soak up the dripping oil. and the cheese
stretches. It doesn't clump up like plastic here.
sometimes we get whole milk from Meijer in Grand Rapids.
Russo's on 29th street has a nice deli counter, not Jewish
style, but greek/italiano style. good cheeses, olives, and
ethnic stuff.
I recently went to NY and met my sister and bro in law,
we went for bagels and lox in the morning to a bagel shop.
We were swooning. then, for lunch we stopped at nathans
near Roosevelt field, and also went to Fortunoffs, because
my DH lost his wedding band, and they are the only ones
who carry it, they sure had to do a search for it, it has the
song of songs on it in Hebrew letters, "I am my beloved and
my beloved is me". Sissy and I had french fries, while Jeffery
had a hot dog. I took a picture of it. It smelled fabulous.the
fries were good as ever.
then, for dinner, we went to the south shore for big lobster.
I had a 3 pounder and sissy had a twin lobster. we were
very happy. I used to go to Jimmys back yard in Port Washington,
now that was a super place for lobster. Steves pier one in
the north shore is still open, and they do a nice dinner, albeit
expensive.
I miss flounder. fresh fresh shrimps and clams and scallops and
tuna and snapper and scrod, mahi mahi, bass, gefilte fish,
fresh lobster, etc etc oh yes, sword fish my goodness yes.
I miss chewy toasted bialys. I can only get those if i make them
myself. since you bake, would you like a good recipe for those,
i loved them split toasted with butter and then tunafish in mayo
on them. yummy.
How about big soft pretzels on th street, by the met or the library?
in front of the long island rr, and grand central? by central park.
How about Italian Ices. Noone here has Italian ices. I miss
squeezing the cup and it running down my hands. I would even
take a choclate, or a watermelon. I love them all. wah wah wah.
what are your restaurant shopping dreams?
I used to love Bonwit Teller, and in fact worked there too.
I worked at Jahns Ice Cream parlor for many years and put myself
through college and 2 new cars on that salary! LOL. the drawback
was being sticky and covered with choclate ice cream all the time.
I miss any restaurant. Any restaurant is great, has to be. I miss the
diners with 8 page menus. and, revolving pie refrigerators. Even
the diners were packed day and night with lines. Great food, lots
of it and fast service. I miss that. I miss rolls on the table. Here,
you are lucky if you get one cold old roll. ugh.
I gave my kitchen aid mixer to my no. 2 daughter as she has 3 kidlets
now and i figure she could use it. that has left me in a lurch, and i
have been looking at the Bosch Kitchen Machine. It kneads and
mixes 6-12 pounds of dough!
Well, write soon, your images make me drool.
