For the Newbie's.....
I just want to send you all a lil heads up...if you are bidding on plants on Ebay or even buying plants mail order...this time of year it pays to have lots of patience due to the heat. Many places don't ship if their temps are high in their area.
I just got my 2nd notice from a seller I won't be getting my order for at least another week. My order is already paid for & it is a little irritating to me that they knew the temps were high when they posted the sales...lol
Anyway, MsC's taking a deep breath & biting tongue...

I'd be annoyed too... I'd be fine with it if they were posting an auction with a note that these plants would be shipped when the weather was milder, possibly not until September, and actually I'd be more confident about getting a healthy, happy plant if I knew they weren't going to ship in hot weather. Not everybody packs with adequate insulation, and even for those that do, they can't keep some idjit from leaving the box on a hot loading dock for hours.
Anyway, that's a good heads-up, especially for anyone who's new to plants by mail.
Hope your plants arrive in good order!
Well if I can mangage to get plants and leaves alive to Canada and poor Don's box taking 13 days :(( I'm sure poeple can ship safe in USA with good packaging.
When I do ship out of Country I send it Global Express it is supose to take only 3-5 Business days and Canada has no mail Saturday. But the border can hold packages up for no reason .
I just shipped three more boxes today and one going to Canada.
Allison, even with your excellent packaging there can be problems in this heat. Your last box wasn't even delayed in transit, but at least half of the leaf pots & little plantlets had suffered from the heat, although there was only one DOA. (I'm not lodging a complaint here -- we're good -- I'm just mentioning that it can happen.)
If I were selling plants, I would not want to take the risk of shipping in very hot weather and then having to try to replace the plant at my expense.... even more so if I were auctioning a one of a kind plant that I couldn't readily replace. Hot weather just increases that "random bad luck" factor.
I'm hoping all your boxes arrive in good shape. :-)
yEs it's a chance you take when too hot, when too cold. I have had fairly good luck with both.
I keep taking my chances. I have had boxes take 2 1/2 weeks out of the country and be fine.
I have also seen many boxes when perfect weather come to me from sellers and vendors in extreme poor condition ~
I guess if I ordered something I'd rather wait to be safe to ship even if I had already paid until the seller felt safe as most of them know their shipping habits and when they feel comfortable.
Sometimes a leaf , plant, leaf pot may not make it beacause of other reasons too. Sometimes this just happens.
I know the box I got from you the plantlets in the one oz. cups some did not make it and ones that did were hard for even I to keep them alive. I guess they were so tiny I lost over half of them(( (I'm not lodging a complaint just these things happen sometimes.
I put no gaurentee on the bargain babies, plantlets, leaf pots selling, nor free or trade plants. It's impossible for me to do so. I'm not a grower, vendor or seller . Just trying to get rid of them. Like when I bought the Bargain plants when D & P went out of Business. I got 27 plants with shipping like $53.00. 3/4 of the plants went into the trash ASP and just maybe out of all of them 4-5 survied. Chance we take.
I also offered you refund for any that did not make it or I messed up. I also offered once I get caught up with the dozens of boxes I need to get out to send you the missed up plants !
Allison, I'd like to repeat that I was *not* complaining about the plants I received from you or suggesting that there was anything that needed fixing... I just wanted to point out that things do happen during shipping, just as you said.
THis is interesting one Ebay seller says if its hot in your area do not bid. She also offeres sale of cool pack. HHMM I never used those before
"I will not be responsible for weather damage. If it is too hot or cold in your area for safe shipping, please do not bid!
Cost of shipping Priority Mail: $6.00 for the first plant - $1.50 for each additional plant. The packaged will be insulated for safer travel. If you need a cool pack for safe travel, they are $1 per box.. some boxes take more than 2, but it is just $1."
I've been hestiant to ship AVs with cool packs (assuming we're talking about ice packs here), because I know they'll also suffer if it's too cold in their box.
I think I just like waiting for weather I know they won't mind!
