I'm a newbie to butterflies, so please forgive my ignorance ... what do you mean by "This one evaded the hummers"?

A Black Swallowtail was basking in my Prickly Lime Ash tree on Sunday. And then was chased and harrassed by a juvenile Black Chinned Hummingbird. The 'Tail was far bigger than the hummer. Is this common behavior? I can't imagine that hummers kill and eat butterflies ... do they?

oh no Carla. They just don't like any other animals to come feed from what they deem their terrotory and will chase them away.
