problems with strep cuttings

Lilburn, GA

Hi!

I planted some strep leaves at the end of April. they rooted and have ears but they are just ears. They don't seem to grow. I feed them with fish emulsion once a week. what should i do? I thought that they should be flowering by now. :o(

PS: they are under lights.

I have one strep leaf (under lights). It was small when I got it this spring, but it rooted and has now doubled in size and put up a second little leaf. Maybe streps are just slow?

oh, these silly gessies... taking longer to bloom from cuttings than from seed! rofl.

I believe once the get going, the grow fast, though.

I grow my streps with very little fertilizer, and the young streps with even less.
Then again, if yours are happy (albeit slow), then I wouldn't change anything.

LOL.... hey just remember each plant moves at it's own pace...and of course remember the tortoise & the hare...

At least they haven't died! that's what mine usually do..;-/..

Keep us posted cause I'm trying a few streps too.

thank you Ms C. I will keep you posted.

yes, but mine were seedlings, not leaf babies. Like I said, they grow faster from seed... but the first blooming is rather mediocre compared to leaf prop.

Ki,
Here's a really dumb question:
Why would they grow faster from seed than from a cutting???

I would think it would be just the opposite??Of course I don't have a clue about Streps so I'm just wondering...:)

Glad to see you have landed safe & sound???

Spider,
I feel for ya. After many tries and yet another batch of seeds, standing on my head, holding my tongue jest right ,blood, sweat and tears....I fianlly got my last try at cp's(red pitcher plant)seeds to sprout earlier this year. They're growing at the speed of a herd of stampeding snails....BUT...they are growing. Hardest lesson to learn for a gardener is patience.

Hurry Up and GROW...Dern Ya!

It may be sense Streptocarpus plants like it cool . I find mine progate faster, grow faster and bloom non-stop when it is cool.
It may be too hot for them. Move them to the bottom shelf end of light tube or natural light. Put them on some moist pebbles to help with the humidity.
Re-Potting them a lot when their growing into new pot and soil ( same size pot is fine) will also encourage them to grow,

Some Older Hybrids and Species Streptocarpus plants can be intolerant of warm tempertures/ A prolonged period of temps of 80 and over can be the begining of the end for some of the Older Hybrids and Species.
Try the end of light tube bottom shelf , mine like it close to A/C vent they don't even mind the cool air on them. Mositure, humidity, Small shallow pots, re-potting often.

I don't know why they grow faster from seed.... I could BS a good answer, but.... ;-)

yes, I arrived safely, thanks.

(so my bs is this. A leaf tries to propagate adult size leaves and flowers, but a seed just tries to grow fast (maybe racing against the end of the growing season or the rainy season) and makes baby leaves and a baby flower.)

thank you everyone!

Allison, I think you are right about the temperature. that room is too hot. i am going to move them.
