Hummingbird buddy?

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

This is a first for me. I have a hummingbird buddy! He's a young bird who flies around my head as I water my perennials after work. He flies right up to my face, only 6 to 10 inches from my nose and just hovers there looking at me! I stand still, holding the hose on whatever plant it was on when he arrived, waiting to see what he will do. Tonight I didn't go out to water. I was standing by the sliding glass door talking on the phone with my son when........my little buddy flew up to the window and hovered right outside at nose level as if he were looking for me! I think he wanted the feeder filled or was wondering why I didn't water tonight. How cool is that? :~D

oooh, I'm jealous. that is so neat! their behavior is fascinating. I'm just glad to see them at the feeders :-)

I'm going to try holding my finger up and see if he will sit. My Hoya kerii is about to bloom so I'm thinking maybe if I hold a scrumptious, juicy Hoya treat in my hand he will sit for a minute! I'm hard-pressed to think of something more sticky-sweet than that! We'll see!

How very neat!! If my 8 year old daughter were here to read this post (she's at her dad's), she'd be all over trying to get our hummer to land on her finger!
Could you possibly dip your Hoya kerii in some nectar to make it more enticing?
Please bear with me because I'm new to hummers and probably don't come up with the brightest ideas. :)

how'bout holding a full feeder when you do your walk around. to start, then maybe change up to a nectar plant flower .I think if you start with the feeder it will become comfy with you feeding it. But a real must is you have to get someone to video tape this!!
Don

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

Good idea Don! Hold the feeder.......duh! I should have thought of that. another great idea about the video tape!

I won't need to dip the Hoya flower into anything Lily, they drip nectar all over the place, they positivly glisten with the stuff. Plus, the flower has a heavenly scent, perhaps my Hummy Buddy will get hooked! I just hope he doesn't get MAD when I go into the yard without a Hoya flower for him! They're so quick I could never defend myself! Ha ha!

too cool Karen, I sure hope carrying the feeder works. If wasps start following you though, drop the feeder and RUN! lolol

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

Hey my friend! Good to see you here. I could really use one of our pants-splitting laughs! You would get one of those laughs watching me run from the wasps, that's for sure. You're probably laughing right now just thinking about it! LOL

who, me? HARHAR I say just set Megs up with the camera, INSIDE, and start snappin when you start runnin. HAR
Of course, you would not need to actually post those humiliating photo's, but you could email them to ME! hehe

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

THIS from one of my FRIENDS! Ain't she great? ("Megs" is my DD.....Megan). PMP and I only live about 30 miles apart. We have had some REALLY fun (translate to FUNNY) experiences. We just laugh and laugh! Dave's is an incredible place to make REALLY nice friends. EVERYONE needs a buddy like PMP! :~D

ahhh (blushing) you are so sweet... But I still wanna see you running through the yard with your arms flapping. hehehe

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

Hey, I came up with a solution for you. This will enable you to keep your hands free and I must say, the color looks great on you. :~D
I am calling it a "hummer helmet", what doyou think?

That's EXACTLY what I need! (and clever PMP, because that's actually a pic of me!) A "Hummie Helmet" so I can water without having to hold the feeder! You should patent that thing........people are gonna want one. Just think, when we can't sleep at night we can turn on our local-schmokel TV station and hear, "But WAIT! There's MORE!" You not ONLY get the Hummer Helmet with the Adjustable Comfort Strap and Wasp-er-ator, but you will get 12 packets of pre-measured food....just mix with water and fill your Helmet!" How could we resist????? Get yer credit cards ready peeps!

You KILL me Girlfriend!

someone at DG (can't remember who it was) posted about putting a flower behind her ear that the hummers liked to get them to come to her.

btw, you guys must be a riot when you get together lol

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

gram, that is a wonderful idea about the flowers behind the ears. I think that would be a lot better then having that sticky syrup dripping down her neck. LOL Yeah, we do tend to get a bit silly when we are together, we are just too much alike I guess. :~)
Karen, I have made you another instructional picture. Toss out the hummer helmet idea.

look who posed for me this morning. No, silly, not you. LOLOL I was coming through the side gate around the back carrying my camera cuz I just had taken another picture of a mushroom I am trying to get id'd and this little fella went zipping in front of me to get to the mandevilla laxa. So I just raised my camera and started snapping. LOL I cropped out the mandevilla cuz I was mortified to see all those black aphid that are on them when I looked at the pictures. ;~D

Awesome picture!!
Yeah, I hate when the sad plants want to be in the picture too.
Nice flowers for Karen's hummingbird lure.

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh my goodness gracious! Megan and I are laughing so hard that the guy at the other end of our hallway (we're at my office) is probably wondering what is going on down here! Megan says you should name those flowers "Elephant Ear Flower"....no doubt! Thanks for the great laugh; NOTHING gets your corpuscles going like a hearty laugh! Your little hummer looks a lot like my guy, 'cept my guy is very skinny (young bird skinny).

Us? A riot? More like obnoxious probably. People must think we're nutz, as if we care. Right PMP? (hey....maybe we are nutz!)

That pic is hysterical, seriously hysterical. :~D

Karen,

That is so sweet to have a hummer friend. I think they are the most adorable little things alive. I can't think of a better little buddy to have following you around. I did read that they like to go through a mist of water. Maybe you can mist him or her next time.

One freckin funny thread!!!!

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Just want to point out that hummers drink the nectar for the energy to catch those bugs you are objecting to.

I just fell in here and was wondering if you've ever seen the hummer approach the flower you were planning to hold. Salvia they will war over.

Kgal, as usual my server went down completely during chat. 3 times

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

Hi Blooms,

Your server has some great timing, huh? I have 2 feeders, plus 2 planters full of hummy plants right under the feeders. My Hoya is still "thinking" about blooming. Hopefully I'll have some flowers for the weekend and I can try my experiment. I'll stand by their favorite feeder and see what happens.

well, shoot Gal, other people get them to sit on their finger why not you?
It could happen. He is coming right up to you. Just give it a chance.

And my hummers would sit on a juniper branch where the sprinkler was hitting and just seemed to delight in the drips off the needle tips. It is so fun to watch our local wildlife. I had a robin who used to encourage me to turn on the sprinkler in the back garden so he could get at the worms easier.

This year no humers at all. after several years of them nesting under the soffit. ;-( ~Blooms
