Blackberry Tumor

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I noticed this on a fruiting stem yesterday. I sliced it open and it looked like a cucumber, but very hard.
Any ideas?

tumor? ...green cocoon?

Indy, Here it is, sliced end to end. It apears to be a swelling of the stem.
Very strange. The wet look is because I rinsed it. I thought the rusty blade had discolored it but no, that is the color(s).
I'm not worried, just curious.

It's a stem gall - there are species of wasps & mites which can induce formation of these 'tumors'. Usually not a problem unless there are large numbers of them.
Google up 'Rubus stem gall' for more info.

Thanks a lot Lucky.
I think I've seen it in years past but it has not been a problem.
Just curious in case it was a real problem.
Thanks again
