elephant ears

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Having just sort of put in a pond, I want to plant elephant ears at the back of it. They grow very well down here. Can I put them in in the fall, or should I wait until spring? I'm also putting in some irises as soon as they arrive; is this a no-no? Just trying to dress it up and add some shade.

I put my elephant ears in the ground in the spring but I put my irises in the ground in the middle of summer. I have yellow bog irises... I have seed pods and/or plants I can dig up if you need some. We are having a RU Oct 14

Thanks, but I've ordered the irises and am planning to steal the ears from a friend. Glad to know I can put the irises in when it's hot, though! Are yours together?

I only ever put one plant in. And you can see what it looks like now

Unhappily, the link came up "not found". ?? Thanks, though. I'll put the irises in as soon as they get here, and probably wait until it's a bit cooler to put in the ears.

Renatelynne, I'd like to see your bog iris, but the link show "not found" for me too. Do either of y'all have trouble with the elephant ears being invasive? There was a bed about 18 inches deep and 20 + feel long against the house with elephant ears in it when we bought the house 3 years ago. I pulled all (I thought) of them out when we redid the back yard. I'm still finding these things sprouting, even from between cracks in the walkway and from under the edge of the house foundation. Make sure you really, really like 'em before you put them in, because I'm not sure you can get rid of them once they start spreading!

you must have a moist spot there... if it is dry they will NEVER come up..

Oh, that's lush. You didn't put those in THIS summer, did you?

It's pretty moist. The irises I ordered are Dutch. Is there a big difference? (If you know.)

No mine are 2 years old. but I only bought ONE plant and it had about 6-8 leaves on it. I don't know what kind.. will have to check the base and see if I kept a tag.

I would strongly suggest you don't plant EEs in a bog, they will take over. Here is one plant after a little over a year. It started displacing the rocks in my pond, sending out runners that floated and covered the pond surface. It had to go.

I've seen it where people have put them in ditches down here and they absolutely fill the ditches up. Not entirely sure that's a bad thing, but I doubt it's a good idea. Mine will be behind the pond, but the pond is a hard-plastic liner that's only half submerged. I placed bricks around the top half. So it's not essentially a bog. We had them when I was a kid, and I know they're hard to get rid of. But if you do want them, they're gorgeous.

yep.. and they do fill up a place pretty good if you have a large expanse you want to color green

And don't want to mow!
