I can take close-ups now

Sammamish, WA(Zone 8a)

Since DH is usually muttering about what whiz-bang new piece of electronics we need in our lives, I managed to ignore rumblings about new cameras for quite a while. Not that I usually take many pictures, since it often takes several days to get DD to return our older camera from her den and up to several more before I give up on DH finding the heap of memory cards he stashed somewhere. However, when I was trying to get decent close-ups of sickly leaves early in the summer to post here for help, and everything blurred, I had to admit he had a point. To cut to the chase, the chosen camera was finally back in stock and came home with us yesterday. With luck, (more likely horrible threats, like denial of cookies) it will not be kidnapped by teenagers and I can shoot my garden. That and the first rain I've seen since the 4th of July is adding up to a pretty chipper day.

Thank you, thank you- I'm beyond pleased with the results, but I must admit the new camera gets the credit. I don't even have the macro lens yet and until the manual starts making sense, I'm not sure I should try to alter default settings.

BTW, you do know that the good and sensible gardeners were asleep hours before we were, but I'm an admitted night-owl and "sensible" is rarely applied to anyone who will jump out of a perfectly good airplane.

Nice pics Kyra, and congratulations on the new camera, but which one did you get ????

KYRA,
If I hold a bouquet of flowers while in freefall, do ya think I could post my skydiving pics here?? hehehe

Nikon D50 with the 28-80 mm zoom it came with. DH is picking up a macro lens, which given how close this zoom got me, should be suitable to capture a flea circus.

Extremely cool!! What kind of gear does that take?

Just home for the evening and wondering what kind of parenting award I'm sposed to get for shepherding three teens to a VERY loud punk rock concert downtown

KYRA,
Just a cheapy cam. The macro goes down to .4", I think thats about 2mm. I enlarged that a bit, and you can see the pollen all over his head/front legs.

Heres what it looks a bit closer. Whatcha think, fellow night owl?

wow!! Don't you just love being able to take close-ups?! I am constantly out in the garden in the morning and at dusk -- perfect times for good natural light, looking for the ideal close-up. Sounds like you've also caught that bug, Kyra!

Yours too! I especially love the little bee antennae!! ;-)

TIFFANYA,
Thank you for your kind words. Didja note the yellow pollen on the antennae?? Thats one BUSY bee

Sumner, WA(Zone 8a)

OH yea! I have been watching bees with "pantaloons of pollen" -- one of these days I'll get a decent shot of one. I think I can buy a macro extension for my camera that would allow even closer shots! ;-) (When I find the money, that is!)

Tiffany,
Are those the heleniums from the monster co-op? I wanted to be sure they were in the order, so I bought 13. They are one of the healthiest plants in my cutting garden and grow about as fast as I pick them.
