Carnosa 'Holliana'

San Francisco, CA

Recieved this recently from Cowboyflowerman on ebay- a very attractive dwarf form of H. carnosa variegata, this form is named 'Holliana'. Hadn't realized there was a dwarf form of carnosa until I saw this. Very attractive! I saw a couple of pictures on the DG plantfiles after I got it. How is yours doing, Christine?

Mark...I have one...but I don't find it is going to eat Cleveland anytime soon!!! A slow grower....and mine hasn't bloomed! Dont know if is the cultivar or if I am a failure...remains to be seen!!!!

Carol, I'm not suprised its slow, being a dwarf. Too bad about it beng a poor bloomer though. Must be tough being an albino dwarf!

LOL!!! It's sure a nifty looking critter, though. Mark, I thought I read somewhere along the way, that you didn't like variegated foliage. What attracted you to this one?

Has anybody seen this hoya in bloom?

Hi Mark, mine's doing okay, but not as nice as yours anymore. Its problems may have started when I had it right in a south-east facing window, where it bloomed its little heart out. (This was before I discovered the knowledgable and helpful people in DG's hoya forum.) The leaves, however, weren't looking very happy, so I moved it to a less sunny location, and then I started taking cuttings for people - all of its vines were showing signs of distress. So, I cut it right back, and tried rooting the cuttings, but they all died. Most of the cuttings I gave away didn't survive either. The main plant stayed alive, but just barely. I changed its location not too long ago, giving it a north-west exposure, so that it gets late day sun, but it is now happier that there is a lace curtain between it and the window. So, again, I learned that bright light and no or dappled sun is best.

Betsy, its flowers are the same as green carnosa flowers.

Mark,

Christine was kind enough to give me cuttings from her plant when she cut it back last year.....i received 2 long ones, then I cut them in half so i had 4 pieces...I got 3 to root and killed 2 of them so I was left with one....its being doing a lot of nothing up until the last few months....now its sprouted about 5 new leaves and starting a little vine outwards....I was ready to give up on the thing but being a hoya, it surprised me!...Yours is very nice looking Mark...good luck with it!

Sandy

edited to say, i have my holliana under grow lights....

Yeah, I dont think i have worry it taking over my place any time soon and its definately has a mind of its own!

I stuck mine outdoors under a tree, low light...tons of rain and lots of drought from time to time and it hasn't died - hasn't bloomed either. Am thinking about letting it go up a tree and show off the foliage....

Carol

I agree Carol, it does have lovely little leaves. Maybe its one of those that needs to get to the top of the tree to bloom....in about 50 years!

Ann, I didn't realize it was variegated when I ordered it- I thought there was a green and a variegated version- looks like the is no solid green one, but maybe a vine will revert to green on mine one day, without reverting to a normal carnosa size. If so, I'll bet that rooted cut would be a lot less fussy. We'll see!
Sandy, I have mine outside in the shade. The other carnosas like it out there, maybe this one will too.

Mark, I had leaves come out all white on this one (like Krimson Queen), but never an all green leaf. Hopefully yours will be different! Those leaves would look so incredibly cool if they were all green.

Christine, mine gave about 2 white leaves at first after it was rooted but the darn things turned brown and fell off after then just sat and pouted.....

Mark, i am sure it will love it outside.....I thought i better not move mine outside because its doing good at the moment and i dont want to jinx it!..I think an all green version would be less picky...lol..

I wish this thread had been posted about a week ago. I have a holliana that I've had for less than a year. It was growing quite well, so I cut off a vine that was about 9-12" long, cut it in pieces and have it rooting. Now, reading everyone's problems rooting it, I wish I had left it alone. Oh well, live and learn. Here she is after her haircut. Karen

Edited to say that I got mine from cowboyflowerman, also.

I got a darling little "just rooted" plant of this from Lorry (she rooted it herself) a few weeks ago, and it is doing fine outside in the shade. I had one a couple of years ago that never did look real good and eventually bit the dust, but I am hoping this one makes it, as I think they are a very cute little plant.
I really don't care if it blooms or not. I think it would look cute in some little fancy planter on a desk or table, etc.
Mark...you are the first person I have known that doesn't like variegated plants. I have an obsession with them They are the first thing that catches my eye when I walk into a nursery.

Marcy, I hope your little guy makes it this time too!

I'm a little like Mark. I am not a huge fan of variegation either. I have two variegated plants - both carnosas, and that's it. I can totally see why people like them, though, because variegated foliage breaks up what can otherwise sometimes be a monotonous field of green. I am most attracted to foliage that has deep burgandy new growth, has color or tonal differences between flesh and vein, extremes in leaf size (either really big or really small) and shape, and/or takes on reddish hues in high light. Of course, because I am a trampy little pig, if offered a varigated hoya, I would never turn it down (LOL)!

Speaking of Lorry, where the heck is she? I haven't seen her post in a while.

Mine is doing ok. I think it likes to grow a little on the dry side and I have it in fairly deep shade. Must like the heat though as mine is growing like crazy. I lost a few leaves to rot with all the rain we had last week but it recovered just fine. I personally don't expect to ever see it bloom. It just looks like it doesn't want to.

Where is Lorry now that you mention it? Oh Lorry.....

I also miss Heather. Maybe she will be back with us soon.

Marcy, I do like the way variegation LOOKS, especially on ones where it is mixed several shades, like australis 'Lisa', but somehow whenever I look at them in my house it occurs to me how much more vigorous and how many more flowers they would produce if they weren't variegated. They also seem a bit busy to me. I should explain that I am a gardener, and so in my own garden and house I tend to like things to be a lot more simple than the gardens I spend my days in. I'm a big fan of simple, plain, relaxing GREEN. Not entirely reasonable, I know. I do like carnosa 'picta', and have one that I enjoy.

You folks who have this plant as holliana will be either surprised or appalled to know that it is circulating under at least 3 other names. I fell for it, and purchased all of them! It's either that the folks who are selling it just don't know any different, or maybe it stopped selling under one name and so they changed the name to garner another 100 or so sales. This happens all the time. I see it on a daily basis! It is being sold as "Sherri, marlea and Carnosa half pint" as well as holliana. None of these names have been registered so none of them are valid names. I suggest that someone decide which name to call them (I personally like the name holliana), send a photo and as much information as possible to Tammy F. She will enter them into our cultivar plant registry and once a year we will print the register in Fraterna. That will make them valid. They will have a name of their own. I would also like to make a suggestion that those of you who are truly intered in trying to weed out all these extra names for the same plant get together with Tammy and form a panel to discuss and decide what names to register the different cultivars under. It's not going to stop people from calling their plants other names. Especially when they are purchased under other names. What it might do is give some validity to just one name for the many dozens of things that are circulating under at least a dozen names. Does any of this make any sense? I guess if we have lots of money and lots of growing room it's O.K. to have 5 or 6 of the same plant with different names.

I think that's a great idea Ann. I must send Tami "Isabella"....

There is, I think, a 'sister' to Holliana running around with the name of Marlea and Sherri or Sharri or something. They were put on the market by 'cowboyflowerman' I believe...he might be a good person to contact for the REAL names for each one. I have seen both of the others a couple of years ago and they are a bit different from Holliana. But with folks not writing things down...I can see why they got all attached to one of them.

ME? I am a real pig for Variegates! At the big nursery sale last night I bought a HUGE variegated Fatsia Japonica...absolutely gorgeous!!!! Even found a variegated Malibar Chestnut and talked my friend into giving it to me!!!!

Congratulations Tammy! You are a great woman for the job of managing the registry and it will be helpful to get the CV mess unified.
