My lemon flying flowers

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

We seem to be enjoying all sorts of flying flowers in the San Antonio area right now....due to alot of different migrations. I do believe that this little lemon colored critter is the prettiest that I've seen. Does anyone know its true name?

Thank you Donna.. :) I love the bright yellow and purple combo... :)

Beautiful! I had one big Sulphur around today and it was the one time I had set the camera down inside the back door! The yellow and purple is great. I think I need to make a special little bed like that.

Maybe the Orange-Barred Sulphur? Looks like it in this pic:

You guys on this forum should get together and make a butterfly calender! there's your July shot! don't know which one I'd pick tho, all 3 are great

Gram, were you ever a member on GardenWeb? That was done and one of mine was used in it! :) I never printed it out tho because I'm too cheap. I think they eventually found a way to purchase it tho and I'm thinking it wasn't cheap either.

This is the pic they used of a Bordered Patch.

I'm really loving this yellow butterfly on the purple. I've got do something with those 2 colors! asap!

beautiful shot KK. I have never seen a Bordered Patch

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Really? I have a lot of them. They are little but very pretty. I recently found a bunch of them on a wild sunflower and raised some of them inside. I left the next batch I found outside but just brought in 2 leaves with a ton of eggs yesterday. Too many to all stay inside tho so they'll go back out when they get a little bigger. I need to create a thread with pics of their stages.

oh please do

konkrete...I believe my flowers are indigo spires....and for some reason, yellow butterflies are all over them right now.. :)

I see LOTS of the bordered patch butterflies here too....

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I've got 2 big Indigo Spires. One started growing real early and I protected it from the late ice so it's huge now. It's so huge tho that it's fallen over and squishing frostweed and some other things. I've been debating on whether to cut some of it back or not. I hate to do it because it constantly blooms but it's just a bully right now.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

yes! I know wha cha mean.....I've cut mine back once this growing season...and it came back alot healthier...but you're right...it IS a bully...sort of trying to squish my little red ruellia....lol...but the flying flowers and bees love it so much...

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

So when you cut it back, was it just stalks? That's all mine is down at the bottom. I didnn't know what it would do if I cut it back. I really need to do it since it's laying down now and since I can't even see it, it's not going to make a difference. I know how many things it attracts tho so I always feel bad cutting them back.

I had to cut my Frogfruit back again today. It's the tallest groundcover I've ever seen and my 7 yr old was complaining about it. He apparently felt it was way over it's boundaries and didn't like that it was covering the outdoor lights. lol At least he won't be afraid to trim! I hesitated tho because it's always covered in little butterflies and bees! It still has plenty of blooms on it now tho.

In case you don't know what Frogfruit is, it's covering the edging with it's little white flowers.

oooo...pretty! My gardens look alot like yours....just things growing where they will.....with lots of balance...without it being too obvious....soo interesting. I love the Frogfruit! I've never seen one of those...

Well, I didn't cut it down to just stalks....but pretty darn close. It sprouted again in next to no time.....and is alot healthier....

The sulphur butterflies are my absolute favorite. They over over my purple lantana and it is quite a site. Since you guys told me cassia/senna attracts the sulfphurs I'm going to get a seedling from my neighbor.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I also get this photo taken of another yellowish butterfly....but it isn't a Sulpher, is it? Just curious.. :)

yes it is a Sulphur but not sure which one. Can't find a exact match for the marking. Maybe a Common or Orange Sulphur. Did you happen to see the top side of its wings??

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

It appears to be a Southern-Dogface. I always thought it was part of the Sulphur family but wasn't sure after you said that. But...this site has it in the Sulphur category. I'm not good at remembering these butterfly family names.

No Donna, I didn't get to...its been so hot here and the wind was howling that day....and this little guy was up in my purple vitex tree.... :)

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

More purple and yellow! I'm becoming obsessed with it now. Ohhhh, maybe yellow daylilies with some purple salvias...

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

oh wow...konkrete....great site... :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol...yeah....the sulphurs have absolutely loved the vitex AND indigo spires this year.. :)

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm definitely going to cut mine back this weekend. I cut a little bit back about week or so ago and put some of the sticks in water and more than half of them have rooted! I knew they rooted easy but have not had any success with just sticking them in the ground. I guess our drought was the problem. I'm glad it worked because I was doing it for our swap in Oct. but now I don't know what to do with them for 2 months! They'll be too big so I guess I'll give some to my parents and pot a few and start more later.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol konkrete...I know....I started another one by just sticking it in the dirt of my garden...and watering it everyday...its now blooming, but knowing how much of a bully it is, I'm beginning to worry that it'll fall all over my woolly butterfly bush.....since the other bush has tried to take over the whole garden in the corner....lol

We too have a swap coming up in Oct...and others are wanting salvias....I'm just going to have to wait for that one...because they grow so fast!
