Many swimming pool liners are treated with bacteria and fungus resistant chemicals, to help keep pool water clean for swimming. These treatments can be highly toxic to fish. If you can't verify with the manufacturer that it would be fish safe, I wouldn't risk it.

Moretz;
I do not know how heavy a pool liner is, but I would think with foot traffic and all it should hold up. One thought I have is that it probably had clorine used on it but if that is the only concern. I would think, go ahead use it, fill it up and use a pond start/ "declorinizer". let it set a couple days and put the plants in. If possible wait another day then try a fish or two. I don't think it will bother at all. I used just regular rubber roofing for a liner. which was against the advice of the pros, I have had fish and plants in it from the second day for at least 8 years now. It is black but I don't think that would make a whole lot of difference. Some pond owners started with a used water bed mattress "bag". It was their pond to enjoy. Blue might just be a little harder to hide the liner, but give it some time and the algae will do that for you! That is my take on it. Hope this has been some help

Snapple;
I didn't think about antifungal and that. but could that not be a good thing. we don't want fungus and bacteria to attack the fish either???

i dont have a clue on this either that is why i am hearing asking LOL this is my first year with a pond but it is a "pond" liner,and i was wanting to make it bigger lol and since this was a "freebee" i thought i might would try it since a new one would cost me about 300.00. but like i told hubby if i am going to do it i am going to get the best and then this came along for nothing and then i started to think lol well maybe this might not be a bad idea. i might set it up somewhere else in the yard-if i can find one with no pipes and wires lol and just test it and see what would happen and then just go ahead and buy the other for the one that i have started. but i am not doing it right now so any more advice is still welcomed lol.dgers have helped me alot with my small pond and i have had great success with it and i hope to do the same with this thxs

Moretz; I think I will sit back and see if any body else has ever used one. A freeby would be nice.
How big are you planning to make the pond?? Always like pictures. Also like to help if I can. It may even be possible that my wife and I would be able to stop by when we visit our sister in law at Sanford.
Not looking forward to any trip just yet, as we just got back from our daughter's in Ohio.
Wouldn't it be nice if we had solar charged electric cars??

yep, randbponder, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial is a good thing, but the chemicals that make it that way are often not. One example is chlorine. We humans can swim in it and drink it but it burns the gills of fish. Although the liner would not be treated with chlorine, as it rapidly dissipates, some swimming pool liner manufacturers do impregnate the liners with other chemicals.

Now if they could just make a solar powered car that would not need solar panels the size of Kansas to get you any distance it would surely be great.

i dont even know how big the liner is lol but i wanted to add on to about 15'X20' i would like to try koi,

so it would be a good idea to see where they go tit from and see what they use to make it out of?i will see if i can do that

Good idea! ((*-*))

I have heard of people who used swimming pool liner and their fish died.
How old the liner was I don't know. Their maybe some way you can "cure" the liner if you ask a swimming pool place maybe they know.

another idea, put some blocks or lumber together. lay the liner over them fill smaller area with water, add cheap feeder gold fish, see what happens.

Whoops that don't sound good Deb. But it is hard to throw a freeby out isn't it!

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

i know i will exsperment with it lol i wont let it go to waste just wanted to know if i wanted to add to my other pond or somewhere else.so it will be somewhere else lol
i heard the roofing liner would kill fish and plants but i have a neighbor that has had one for 4 years now and she has 15 or more koi and tons of plants in hers and none has died to this day so i dont know i guess it depends on what oyu know and find out lol not sure

WOW!!!!!!!!!!
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i want one that BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hornick, IA(Zone 4b)

I found the roofing material to be about 2/3rds. the cost of pond liner and I got 60mil as opposed to 45mil pond liner.
I think I remember the cost was like 50cents sq.ft. the 45 mill roofing was a dime cheaper per sq. ft. That was getting it from a supplyer not a contractor.
Was going to send a pic of the falls on my pond but I will have to down load it first to file it is still on the CD.

I personally does not take a lot of chances trying to save $. the pool liner has been treated with some chemicals and rubber absorbs. it will costs more if your fish will die and the emotions that goes with a loss. i just finished redoing my girlfriends pond and all the materials came from AZ ponds. The firestone rubberliner are shipped free. Good luck to you. Bellie
