use for left over baskets

Knoxville, TN

I bought this basket a few years ago with a coco liner. I had a brain storm last week as I was watering in the greenhouse and knocking over small pots. I soaked long fiber spaghnum, filled the basket and sunk pot and all in the spaghnum. I then added Cryptasnthus pups around the bottom.

That is the very same kind of basket I used to do my large hoya trellis with the unknown hoya in it.
I also have a couple of different hanging ones that have that coco fiber in them. I was wondering what to do with them. Maybe I will make a "small plant party" in one of them too. Good idea Mel.

Great Idea!! I have a couple wire baskets that would look neat like that!!

Good to see you, Jamie!

Here is another basket. H. imbricata gave me a fit until I started growing it with this method. I sank the pot in a net pot and filled in around the pot with spaghnum and it rewarded me by becoming a happy Hoya rather than a difficult one.

Well done, Mel. Very clever....

Clippers heck, lets just borrow the whole stand..... Mel do you mind if I e-mail the photo of the whold stand to my girlfriend so she can make me one? Or two... :) I like your mosiac too, do you use it as a bird bath or is just decorative?

Knoxville, TN

Marcy, yes it is a rain fountain. It was a Mothers Day present from DH and Son. Hey, washing mens underwear and socks all year has some rewards!

Sure Tami. It is fine for you to send the picture. The mosiac is a bird bath. I did not mean for it to be decorative. I had just cleaned it out and that is why it is sitting there.

Hi Mel,

I'm really interested that your H. imbricata is growing so well after you planted it in the basket.
I have had a H. imbricata for a couple of years and all it does is sit there and squints at me with 'one eye half open'.... and refuses to play!!
I know high humidity is one of the keys to success... which I guess your sphagnum helps to provide, but I am also keen to know what sort of mix you have it in (in the mesh pot), and do you keep the sphagnum just moist or wet all the time? Also, how long have you been growing it in the basket outside?
It really does look like it's loving the conditions you're providing it.

Thanks,
Matt

Thanks Mel. I like the design on your mosaic and have a poppy pattern but couldn't decide what to do in the background. I like the green and white. There's a winter project I can work on!!
Marcy she makes some really cool stuff. She has sinced move over close to you. Here is a photo of a plant stand she made, she made me two of them. The store where the stand was originally they wanted $300.00 for the darn thing. So I drug her over there and she whipped me up a couple and two for my sister as well. At less than 1/2 the price.

Thanks for you kind words, Matt!

Your description sounds just like the way my plant looked. I cannot tell you how many cuttings I have rooted and they just sat and looked pitiful for the longest time. The first problem I had with it was it was covered in scale when I got it. After getting that problem under control, I tried the plant in different places trying to find the best spot for it. I have wire shelves in my greenhouse and line the top and bottom of one set of shelves in heavy plastic. That is the location that worked to get the plant growing. I use Fafard 3 mix and coarse perlite and keep it damp. I do not like planting directly in the spaghnum becasue when it breaks down and rots, the roots usually rot with it. That is why I put the plants in pots and use the spaghnum around the pots to increase the humidity. It also gets good air circulation and plenty of misting.

I moved the imbricata into the wire basket this spring. It is all about trial and error and not giving up!

That is a treasure Tami girl! It is worth every penny. I have a weakness for plant stands. I guess it goes well with my pot problem!
