to one plant of black beauties. notice all the wrinkels and the fruit is very soft. the larger ones on the plant are not as wrinkeled and not as soft. when i cut it open it looks o.k. to me. my other plant seems to be o.k. with hard fruit.

I don't really know, but if I had to make a guess, I'd say too much water?
The pictures are a little, but they look like big purple pickles to me!!!
Does the plant wilt? One possibility is Phomopsis blight . At some point this disease usually shows as dark tan sunken spots on the fruit. Will this spread to the other plants?
Yes , but it is mostly a contact disease. soilborne for the most part. Don't handle the infected eggplant and then handle healthy ones withou washing up good first. Clean up your plants when they are through and don't compost them.Rotate but avoid spots that have recently grown tomatoes, peppers, or potatoes.
o.k. i got home this afternoon and checked the plant. happy to report that all the eggplants are nice and hard. don't know what happened but all is okay in the world. LOL
