Do you have your Heliconia in the ground over winter? I'm wondering if it would survive in the ground next to my cannas and EE over winter in zone 8a. PLMK what you think.

Nice picture! Looks extremely healthy.

Deborah,

I'm new to FLA, and I only grew 1 heliconia last year. It died back when winter came. I left the rhizome in the ground, and it came back up this Spring.

Same deal with Cannas.

I'm in a little warmer zone than you (9a), but I would think the same would happen to you.

I think I will try over-wintering it in the ground then. I'll mulch the area good too. I've read where several people over-winter plants that are not for their zones and have success with a come back in the spring. I just wasn't sure with heliconia. My cannas can't be killed with a blow torch. I have no problems with them coming back. :>)

Thanks for answering.

Deborah,

For assurance, you could post your question in the Georgia Gardening Forum. People there would know better than I do.

Steve
