HI! I was out yard saleing today and I was driving past this small garden center and I saw this hibiscus on the back table. I shrieked to a halt in front and went over and bought it. there were a couple of others I could have got, but none had this large or this fresh looking a flower. The tag says the name is 'Heaven Scent' and that it is a grafted plant. The hand in the first picture is that of my 21 year old son. I love it! Do you think that subsequent blooms will be as large? It has two other buds so I guess I will find out in the next week or so.

Here's a closeup of the flower.

OMG, I almost bought that plant today but the buds were tight and the nursery people had no idea what the flower was like. The plant I saw had that same tag saying it was a grafted plant. I was not aware they grafted hibiscus.
Now I wish I had gambled on the flower color and bought it. I am visiting the grandkids this weekend and will not be back to the nursery where I saw it. Drat !
A question - does it have a "scent"?
Oh, it's beautiful. I want one. Of course, I want them all.
oh how beautiful
Um, no. Not scented. It was pretty hot when i bought it so that if there was a scent it should have been apparent right away. I have never really heard of a scented hibiscus before. This is just the name that was on the grower's label. They had several different colors but I adore yellow flowers so I had to have this one. I can't imagine that I won't be back to the nursery where I bought this to pick up another one at least. I have to be careful though as I have limited indoor space to store these in the winter time. fortunately the plant is small in comparison to the flowers.
Martha
I think it is exquisite
The secondary bud has opened. Not quite as big, but still impressive.
Martha
This is one of my most favorites too. It is just so yellow!! And so frilly! Carlos said it was scented but mine never had a fragrance.

I am going to go out tomorrow morning early and see if I can catch a whiff of fragrance. I think the first blossom may have been open too long for me to smell anything. We'll see.
Martha
I have this on my outdoor table on the deck. The secondary bud looks as big as the first but again tonight, no noticeable scent. I am going to try for the yet unopened bud tomorrow early. This could be just like corpseflower!! The major scent is released right at the opening and it travels pretty far, but after about 45 minutes, it's all done.
There's just lingering scent in the air.
Martha
I am afraid to ask what a corpseflower smells like. ICK, what a thought.
Stinky, Kell. Very Stinky. But those botanic places that have em {Huntington's got a couple} become a plant tourist mecca when they are about to bloom. They have a pair here at the UConn greenhouse that bloomed two years ago. There was a live feed webcam to watch it 24/7 {mostly for the botanists} and people flocked down to see it for about a week around the actual bloom. The bloom only lasts 24-36 hours. We got in a little after the event and you could still smell stinky in the greenhouse. According to Google, the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers just had "Ted" bloom back at the beginning of June. Apparently, he is on loan to them from UC-Davis.
Of my new hibiscus, the second bud had no scent this morning and the third was opening also with no scent. It might just be certain ones that have it. I will keep sniffing.

Martha, Beautiful bloom, lucky you!!
Judy
The fourth bud was in full bloom today and looked even fuller and more frilly than the first. A very tiny new bud has formed also, but we are weeks away from that being big enough to bloom. Still no scent. I have had 5 people sniff it so far and no one has gotten even a hint of scent. God forbid, but if it went away tomorrow, I surely got my money's worth with this plant. It has been a joy to look at every day since I bought it.

Martha That is to die for. My favorite color hibiscus is yellow.
Was it very expensive if I may ask??
WoW it is pretty.
It came from a small upscale nursery. 16.95. I don't usually spring for that kind of price but I couldn't leave it there. I am going back next week to see if they have any of them marked down. Fall is coming and the chrysanthemums too. they will need the table space out front.
Martha
The one I saw was over $40.00 (it was large in a 5 gal. pot.). This was the #1 reason I didn't buy it. By comparison I'd say you got a bargain.
Good luck with the fall sales.:-))))
This was only a 1 gallon plant with three branches. They also had them trained as standards, but I have no room for more than the one standard that I have already so I didn't look at the price. I am sure it would have been proportionally up there too. I treated myself because the town I was in thinks too much of their stuff at yardsales to ask reasonable prices and so I was in kind of a disappointed mood. The people there would buy these plants and stick them out front for the summer and let them go with the first frost. Sigh. This plant changed my mind!
Baby is now down to two new forming buds. All of the old ones have bloomed and gone. I am glad I took the pictures. Not one of the original flowers was scented.
Martha
The second wave is about to commence. there is a bud about to open on top. I don't know if it will be as large as the first wave. Tomorrow I will check.
Martha
I got that one out at Hidden Valley Hibiscus 2 years ago. It is supposed to occationally have a scent and waft it off only when it feels like it. Ha. I personally have never caught it at the right time I guess.
However, I do love the color. It is also one of those that makes both kinds of blooms (single and double) on the bush at various times. It must be a slow grower too as I planted it in the ground and it is still a fairly small plant. I love the big beautiful leaves also.
You got a very good buy.
Marcy
Second wave has come out just as full as the first. I didn't get a picture since it bloomed out full on Saturday while we were away and it was raining when we got back last night and all of today. Maybe it will hold out until tomorrow and I can get a good picture.
Martha
I wish I could find some fancy standards. I am a lollipop woman.
I can't wait to see a flush on this one. Yours is so healthy looking.
Kell,
I have done nothing to it except put it in a decorative pot that will hold water so it doesn't dry out. This is the way it came from the garden center. I am so amazed by it! Right now, it is an inspiration to see it. I should probably stick some osmacote on it after this bloom phase.
Martha
Lollipop woman! LOL
The Third Wave has begun in the house. I brought this one in last week and it is blooming in my garden window. I love this plant!!!
Martha
Do you notice any scent from this one in the house? Ii is just terrific when a plant you like performs so well; happy for you.
Still no scent. Indoors or out. My sun room is small enough where any fragrance would linger. Outdoors, this plant sat on the deck which regularly caught the breezes. So if it didn't have a heavy scent it wouldn't be noticeable.
Martha
Guess I have lost count of the waves. This plant has bloomed three separate times since I brought it in. it has a flower now, one of my Christmas presents, I guess. I love this hibiscus. Still no scent.
Martha
Here I am, a year later! Heaven Scent has just bloomed with its first flower of the season today. It looked like dead sticks when I put it out this spring, but it leafed out well and has a bunch of buds. We have had enough rain for hibiscus this season and that has made a difference. All of my others are blooming well also. Just this one is the most spectacular.
Martha
Pretty hibiscus. Love the yellow/gold color.
Martha... Are ya stil sniffign too a year later? : ) Did ya ever find any scent.
