Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

I've got conflicting information on this plant and hope someone can clear it up for me. Does this plant bloom repeatedly through the year, just spring or just fall. Plantfiles has conflicting info. I found some today on sale and think I want one, but would like to know the bloom period before digging that hole! Thanks.

Mine only blooms in the spring. End of April, first of May... I get a rare blossom otherwise. I have seen others that bloom sporadically throughout the summer. I believe there are different variations.

As no one else has responded, let me continue. I keep this plant in a pot and keep it pruned. I also keep the seeds picked off. It is now so rootbound that it is sprouting suckers. I have removed and started one in a seperate pot. I do enjoy this plant. It is pretty even when it isn't in bloom. One of my favorite garden references indicates only spring/early summer on the blooms. Another indicates under favorable conditions, all brunfelsias can bloom throughout the year. Any idea of the variation you found?

Not only does mine not bloom, it hasn't grown an inch in 5 years..
Have moved it twice..
Do they prefer pots?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't think they necessarily prefer pots. I think mine likes the preferential treatment it gets in a pot. It is easier for me to keep it in a pot, better soil, more regular water and I do fertilize occasionally. Mine seems to like bright filtered light. If I am not mistaken, I am probably 100 miles north of you. I know an older guy who has his in the ground. He always fusses as mine blooms earlier than his. As far as growing, mine is not tall, maybe 3 feet. I prune to fill it out and shape it.

Podster, I grew up not far from you, in the booming metropolis of Pineland. I don't know the particular cultivar of the one I saw at the nursery. Is yours evergreen there or do you bring it inside in winter? I want something evergreen for a pot that will get several hours of direct sun. Maybe this isn't it, huh?

Actually, I think the answer would be yes. Mine stays evergreen. On really cold frosty nights, I cover lots of things with sheets but may not need to do so. The reference (National Garden Book) does say it is an evergreen shrub.
There is one listed that is less cold hardy. It has fewer but larger flowers and bigger leaves. It is Macrantha (B. Floribunda, B grandiflora).

I would offer you the small one I have rooted but am not sure if suckers will be true or even bloom.

Crow, showing you are in Hou, mind if I ask which nursery?
I work for wholesale grower & we grow YT&T, & supply several of the 'better' nurseries around town. I could tell you exactly which one it is, if we supplied it.

There you have it! Thanks for assisting Smockette!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, Smockette. I use a couple of different nurseries here. Cornelius at Dairy Ashford and I-10 is the one I saw it at and where I've bought the bulk of my new landscape plants. Do you supply to them?
