Who has dill?

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Looking in the supermarkets for fresh dill, and I can't find any. Does anybody grow it and would want to sell some?

This doesn't help your immediate need (I can't grow dill to save my life), but when you find a bunch of it, if you have more than you need you can make dilly vinegar to use for next year's pickles.... I've got some strongly dilly vinegar waiting at the back of my fridge! If you have a local farmer's market or roadside stand, try there also... and ask if you don't see any for sale, as there may not be enough demand for them to have it on hand, but they may be able to cut you a bunch of it.

Thanks critter. I made 4 pints of "dill pickles" today from a new recipe. Since I hadn't used the recipe before, didn't want to invest a lot in ingredients, if the recipe didn't turn out well. So instead of fresh dill, as the recipe called for, I used the dill flakes. Don't know if the taste will be the same or not. Thanks for the tips. Our county is having a "harvest showcase" tomorrow, with all the farmers in the area bringing their produce to sell. Maybe I will get lucky and find some there.

This won't help with your immediate needs, but I have some seed you are welcome to. Just LMK if you're interested.

I also have some dill seed if you should want any. I had trouble in the past also growing dill. This year I was lucky. My husband bought a pkg of mammoth dill seed from Burpees, it grew just great.

Defoecat............It is one of those herbs I can't live without!!!! I grow it in a pot sowing direct (no transplanting - they hate it) There is one called Bouquet Dill - it is compact and ideal for pots.

Mine were from T&M I haven't opened the packet yet because I still have some from last year and I would be happy to post them to you if you send your addy.

Bonnie, I didn't go to the Farmer's market today but will next week. I'll get you some fresh dill if the vendor still has some. I paid $1 for a pretty full sandwich baggie. In the grocery stores that carry fresh herbs in plastic boxes, most of them are around $2.99 and don't have nearly so much in them.

|Since I am goint to the harvest showcase today, maybe I will find someone who has it. If not, I sure appreciate your kind offers, and I will let you know over the weekend if I need your assistance or not. Thanks,

I, too, have terrible luck with dill. I have tried sowing seed in the soil and also planting in small pots to be transplanted. Neither works for me, but, get this, the ones I transplant do better than the ones I plant directly in the soil. I have all kinds of herbs, but dill just doesn't grow for me. Any tips?

I'm unlucky with dill also... But I need to try the clump transplanting method that Tom DeBaggio uses, says it works great for dill and other "untransplantable" herbs... See http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/589725/

Me too...even with clump transplanting I always lose quite a few. Make em chunky clumps;)

Good news, went to the harves showcase and found fresh dill. Thanks everybody for the offers, but I am set for now. Need to think about growing some for next year.

Remember to continue plantin it throughout the season. I always forget and then one batch dies on me *right* when I'm getting ready to pickle. Urgh!

Glad you found some!

Darius, me too, and it was a very generous bag full for $2.00.

Isn't gardening strange. Once I plant dill, it comes back every year all around where it was first planted. I have some about 6 or 7 feet tall but leaning against supports because the plants blew over and partially snapped in some strong winds.

Well, it won't grow for me either. Can't imagine it that tall! Bet that's a sight to see. :-)

Darn it, roseone, why aren't you right down the road from me?

That would be nice Zeppy. I'd love to see your place and meet your family.
Being a Mom was my favorite part of life. Very unlikey I will be moving.
