SATURDAY, July 29: Texas "Coffee" and Gardening in the Morn

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

DH and I are going to dinner next door tonight at 7:30...great bottles of wine...and they are gourmet cooks! So....since we don't have to drive...I'll probably imbibe more than I should...walk home...and fall into bed. Nothing puts me to sleep like wine! haha

So....I'm posting tomorrow's "Coffee" now...and will try to remember to place a link on today's...

Good morning, everyone! I'm going to bed now (finally.) My DH is out of town, and I never sleep well while he is gone. Praise God, he doesn't have to travel very often!! Hopefully my little bunnies will sleep in a little so I will be able to, too. :-)

Turning on the pot so the coffee will be hot when the morning people start wandering in....

Good Saturday morning! To those of you who are off today, have a good time out working in the yard in the sweltering heat! I'm off to the a/c at work. Have a good day!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well you two are up early for a Saturday! Have a easy day at work Podster.
Marylyn you nap is almost over!!! Connie, you should be getting up soon, unless the wine was reeeaalllly good, lol!!

As for me, the dogs woke me up at 3 am, I kicked them out and went back to bed. Just got up at 6:30 and fed them, and settled down with my first cuppa. Got my Dave's Garden cup too!! I won't be on here long because I have to work in the yard on Sat. as you all know the heat won't allow it in the middle of the day.

By the way Dave said he will have the DG cups for sale at the RU in November, he isn't shipping anymore due to the costly replacement for breakage.

Well I need to send this along, and get up and move around a bit. The back is still in the mornings.

Frisco, TX(Zone 8a)

It's cloudy and overcast here this morning. i need to go to my mother-in-law's house and weed for her. She also has a mini=rose that isn't doing well and said i can take it home with me. I'll Messenger it and see what I can save. Then some mulch since her soil seems to break it down at an extraordinary pace...maybe my garden will get some work tomorrow.

Sheila, Do you know how much the DG cups are? I hope to be at the RU...

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm here, but barely. I think I am allergic to red wine, which will really deal me AND DH a hard blow! I awoke in the middle of the night and felt like I had a cold!!! (This is the first time I've drunk red wine since I quit taking Flo-nase, my allergy meds.) Plus....I got a fiber in my eye, so all last night at the real nice dinner I was "crying" and trying to get it out! It was a miserable night!!

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

Good Morning! Or is it close to noon now. lol Something must be in the air! I was sick last night too. Up and down most of the night so I am very late getting up and out to water my plants.

Hope everybody has a nice day!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I've been out at Cornelius nursery this morning. Tons of stuff on sale for 30% off and I had a 1/2 price coupon on top of that. I love it when that happens! I bought a hamelia, Indigo Spires sage and a huge porterweed. Trying to keep my hummers and butterflys happy. Only problem is now that I've got them home, hubby has to dig holes and it's awful hot and sticky out there. Happy Saturday Gardening!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Just in from watering pot plants and cleaning out my "gardening center" which is under our deck. (The only problem with this area is that the ceiling is 5 foot 2 inches...and I'm 5' 4"!!)

DH and I are going to Salado today...it's a little town that has turned into a shopping mecca...arts and crafts, antiques...you know the type. He's scouting fishing areas and will drop me off to shop!

See everyone later!!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Teacup...I just saw your entry....I have NEVER been able to keep those little mini-roses growing. I think they're just little hot-house, one-season wonders. Let me know if you keep it alive and what you do to it! I've got a huge order of messenger coming....

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Connie, did you know next weekend is the Salado Art Fair? I've not been to it, but am told there is lots of great artsy, crafty, antiquey kinds of stuff and it's a fun weekend. I just wish they'd make it in the fall or spring when it's cooler. Outdoors is not where you want to be in mid August in Texas!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

No, Crowellli, I didn't, but I'm giving a huge party for a friend's 50th birthday next weekend, so that's out! I have attended it in the past, and it's very hot!! They also have a huge Christmas thing at least one weekend, and I love to do that when it's cold out!

Plus...I once dated an artist who owns Prellop Art Gallery there....Larry Prellop. He does beautiful landscapes that usually include waterfalls!

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

connie...sorry to hear about the red wine....; teacup...i can't grow those stupid roses either....good luck

i wish i lived down there around the gorgeous places...up here in hot windy ugly wasted texas.....have a great weekend

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Connie....Hope you have, (or had maybe by the time you read this) fun in Salado. I lived in Waco and used to go down there a lot. But my DH and I have gone there too since we married. It is worth the drive. I love to browse through all the little shops. I am not so much into the antiques, but the crafty looking way that they display them attracts me. If you get hot you can go the the creek that is in town and wade in the water!!

Oh, teacup.....The DG cups are $10 each. They are large and heavy very well made. I got three just incase I broke one. I bought them at the RU from Dave, that way I saved shipping.

Crowellli... Great buys, would love to find those bargains!

I'm just back from my MIL place and the mini rose looks awful. It isn't one of those supermarket wonders however but RiseN Shine from Antique Rose Emporium. maybe there's hope.it's in a pot now watered with SuperThrive and tonight it's get some Messenger...
I moved here last year and promised my MIL that i would take care of her small beds since it's hard for her to bend down now. So I spent last fall and winter planning what i would put it, then getting the beds ready. they were covered with weeds and made up of compacted clay. There were some straggly verbena there and those have done great with the compost, mulch etc. They have bloomed all summer with just a little deadheading.
I didn't realize how much shade the huge old pecan tree would cast on half of this bed during the day, so all the sun lovers I put in aren't doing much at all.I have never had a garden with shade so i get to experiment over there.
I wanted easy care, long blooming things that don't get too tall because it is such a small area.
Doing great: the no name red verbena,Blue Shade Ruellia, mexican heather, creeping jenny

Doing OK: Knockout rose(it's in the sunniest corner)lantana( but no blooms), butterfly iris(growing but no blooms) some dianthus that are hanging in there...foxtail asparagus ferns, a small Rosemary cultivar Santa barbara..

Doing awful: Profusion zinnias(not enough sun I think because mine are reseeding and going like gangbusters), salvia greggii, pentas

I think i'll put in coleus and impatiens next year. Any other ideas?
nancy

teacup, I'm surprised the pentas aren't doing well in shade. I have tons of them and the ones in full sun aren't happy, but in dappled shade under pines, they bloom almost nonstop all year. They've been in the bed for 3 years now and were trimmed back in very early spring. They are just gorgeous now. Other things that are doing well for me in this partial shade bed are a white plumbago (better than the blue for shade, for me), caladiums (have come back for 3 years), impatiens, tri color sweet potato vine, dragon wing begonia, dward nandina, and plectranthus. If you take a look at my journal, you can see pics of a lot of these. I also have knock out roses, but they do need at least 4 hours of sun for bloom and do better with more. Mine get about 6 hours of sun and are doing great.

Frisco, TX(Zone 8a)

Crowelli,I think the problem with her pentas is the high sodium content we have in the water here. When it gets on leaves it can leave almost a burned area on some plants. That's what it looks like with hers anyway(they are in a pot)
My knockout rose is three times the size of hers, but they are in full sun at my house.I'm just happy it is still alive since the RiseNShine looked so bad.
I hadn't thought of caladiums. They would add an interesting texture there.I'll have to look at plectranthus. I'm not familiar with that. thanks for the ideas...nancy

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

teacup...i second what crow said....but also polka dot plants, wishbone flower...torenia; my glossy abelias love the shade...they are still small but grow up to 5 ft....

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I just got back from plant shopping at Paradise Nursery in Dayton..I got few more gingers and picked up a Mexican Orchid tree which the leaves look like sheep hooves....not like the others that are heart shaped...

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Sticks, I love abelias and am still trying to get the new dwarf variegated variey called "kaleidascope". Local nursery says they'll have them in spring. I'll let you know how it does here once I get my hands on some. I started to order it from Wayside, but someone on here said that they were very disappointed in Wayside plants, so I'll wait. Also, do you have a problem with the polka dot plant taking over. I planted 3 tiny 4" pots of it 2 or 3 years ago and it has totally taken over the large bed it's in, smothering everything else.. It's reaching a height of over 3 feet and is has lost it's pretty pink in the full sun. Kind of mottled color now, but mostly green. I love torenias too, but I couldn't find any here this year. I may just not have gone to the right place at the right time though.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

crow i wish i had a problem with anything trying to take over.....but i havent had a problem....then again this is my first year with polkadots....you are the area where they are perennials...right?? i am told they will die back and hopefully spit seed b4 and come back....i am like crossing toes and fingers.....

i was nursery gazing the other day and saw that abelia you are talking about....OMG it was lovely....i can see why you would love it...keep me posted when you get it...

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Sticks, they aren't supposed to be perennial here, but I've had them in the ground with no protection for 3 years at this house and for 4 at the old house without a problem. They did get some freeze damage, but once trimmed they always came back. They do fine in sun or shade, but the color stays better in shade.

I will add to this conversation to start off Sunday's thread. See you there.....???
