Looking for Patella......

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Asiatica ( http://asiaticanursery.com/) has both the pink and white for only $28, well they now have 1 less white:-). I did some major damage yesterday. Here is what I ordered:

Hoya patella, white flower
Hoya dasyantha
Hoya lobbii, pale corona
Hoya archboldiana 'Bold Edge it's variegated
Hoya caudata, selected form
Hoya crassicaulis
Hoya padangensis
Hoya ruscifolia

The shipping was only $42 for 8 plants. There are several more I'm going to add next payday:-), and they will all be shipped together at the end of August or when we have a week of temps below 100. Last week we had several days of 116+ and today its only 101????

Blessings,
Awanda

Well, you lucky duck! $28.00 for the H.patella is a great deal! I am anxious to see your variegated archie. I bought one from Thailand for $100 and lost it. Not to worry tho. You always seem to do really well with the plants I kill. Make sure to post pictures when your order arrives!

I love the caudata they have listed. Love Love Love.... In fact they have alot of new beauties on there. To hot here to order any of them now though.

Mel, oh my gosh, that had to of hurt... I'm having sympathy pains for you !!! Happy to see you posting, must mean the yard work is over. Get out by the pool girl...

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

GREAT buys! For 48$ are they hand delivering it?

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Mel I also thought $28 for the Patella's were a great buy, I've seen them much higher at other sites. Tami I would love to buy at least 2 of their caudata's, I will probably add the 2nd one to the order I'm placing next week. It would be great if they could deliver them tomorrow, it's only supposed to be 102; that's why I'm having them wait until the end of August....maybe!! I'm sure the variegated Archie will do well for me, I've never been disappointed in any of the plants I've received from Asiatica!

Blessings,
Awanda

Tami, you are so sweet! I am waiting for the cabana boys so they can bring me little umbrella drinks and fan me while I lounge on the float.

Awanda Dear, just have Asiatic send them to me. It is supposed to be in the 80's over the weekend. We have not had a good rain in weeks. I feel like the water hose has become a body part!

Prescott, AZ

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

I am only 30 miles from Asiatica. Went to their open house last month. Awesome.

Philomath, OR

Buttoneer, Do they charge the same in house as they do on their web site? I have placed an order earlier in the spring and bought only 2 plants. The shipping was over $18 for 2 plants! They wanted over $42 for 4 plants! These were 2" pots with single 12"+ plants. They probably didn't weigh a pound together with the box! Eeeegads, I just won't pay that. I paid less (a lot less!) than that for 4 LARGE plants that were 2 day FED-EX from HAWAII!

I wonder if they have some weird expensive inspection they must pay for. If so, they need to state that on their web page so people know that they are not just ripping people off and pinning it on the USPS. Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth. -joanne

I think some shippers charge the time their employees take to wrap and package...plus a little cushion. Profit from merchandise is fine...but I think shipping should be clear cut. There are costs involved with buying some boxes (for the larger orders...can be as much as 4$ each) but all the other stuff is just part of doing business.

If they get away with it...why stop?

Asiatica has just added this beautiful "Macrophylla" Pot of Gold http://asiaticanursery.com/product_info.php/cPath/53/products_id/1409
to their listing. They must have sold out of the white Patella since they won't be shipping anymore until next spring.

Oh My Gawd, did you see the price for that thing??? $110.00 for a plant in a 3" pot? I sure hope it comes with a pot of gold!

When I went to their "open house" last month, the prices of certain plants were discounted maybe 10%. I bought 3 plants: Alocasia lindenii for $ 18, Cyrtosperma johnsonii for $ 22, Caladium Hok Long for $ 15. When I checked the catalog, the prices were the same. The discounted ones were mostly hardy woodland plants (listed in the catalog) which they had outside under an open garage. Asarums, Tricyrtis, Hosta, Arisaema, 7 some hardy woodland orchids. I was happy just to be able to go there & see the plants up close & personal. I should have bought Hoya imbricata & another shingle plant they had there but they wanted $ 30 each and I wanted to save money. I didn't pay any salestax case I gave them my salestax number. The only way to get to see these plants is when they have an open house and in this case, they had one because there was a Hosta convention going on in Philadelphia & they wanted to attract potential buyers that were attending the convention. I belong to a local Hobby Greenhosue Association and that's how we got in, through the club. Hope this helps.

My experience with them was not good! the shipping was way out there and my plant wasn't even a pound,He gave me sum bull about time to go get the plant out the GH,I thought walking was free? hmm My plants live down by the bayou!! I payed more for shipping than the plant,I would have retracted the bid but didn't want a negative on my feedback..So I have learned Hawaii is cheaper to ship! He has sum beautiful plants but once bit twice shy!

I agree with you. There is no reason for the exorbitant shipping unless he is trying to recoup his shipping from overseas. With the price of the plants he charges, he should be making that up, anyway.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

He does have some interesting species....IF they are indeed correctly labeled. I don't mind paying thru the teeth for something that is worth it...but for a ho hum hoya to pay those prices AND the outtasight shipping...something is wrong. I priced some plants and my shipping FedEx 2 day would be 38$...for probably a pound of weight.... Granted, I get a good deal from FedEx...but he could cut one too.... USPS would have been 24$. Still a burn!

Edited to clarify the above...."I priced some plants and my shipping FEDEX 2 DAY (FROM ASIATICA TO ME - MY CHARGES FROM ASIATICA) would be 38.00". Oh Heavens be Blessed, Awanda...I would never charge that....:>)))))

Carol let me see if I understand what you are saying. You would charge $38 to send a pound of plants, about how many plants would that be and will they arrive in good conditon without broken leaves or the pots being smashed so badly you need to repot? Why then did you charge $14 to send an almost 4 inch pot of Hoya lacunosa 'Poonsak' on a recent ebay win or $12 for H. cv. Iris Marie growing in a 3 1/2 inch pot? Does it cost more to send an ebay win vs. a regular order? If you have a problem with Asiatica's shipping policy just don't order.

Awanda

Okay, I only let everyone know what happened to me...I really like there plants, but paying 30.00 for a plant and 28.00 for shipping is a bit much! When it arrived the usps label had 6.95 on it..I would love to order from them!! I think it's great Awanda that you are getting a good deal on shipping!! I wonder if I could get a shipping quote? Will have to look into that!

Dianne

I am very sorry if my comments started ill feelings,This is such a good website and I should have just kept this to myself.

Dianne you have nothing to be sorry for, your posting didn't start anything. Everyone is just expressing opinions and experiences with Asiatica:-)

Could we not forward the whole tread to them and let them see how people feel about the shipping prices ?????

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Sandy last year I think they posted on their website about receiving lots of emails regarding their shipping cost. They have since added USPS shipping which is cheaper than using 2 day Fedex.
During the winter in Arizona I do use their priority mail shipping and the hoyas have always arrived in great condition.

Since I only live 35 miles away, I asked about ordering & picking up. I was told that it would have to be between 9:00 am & 3:00 p.m. M-F since they are there, watering. and on Saturday a.m. only with no guarantee they would be there. I work M-F from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and that is not possible. Most Saturdays, I am doing craft shows & are out of town. I am not letting them force me to pay their ridiculous shipping prices when I live within driving distance.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I heard from someone at Asiatica that their plants are propagated elsewhere and shipped to them at rooted cuttings. They transplant and grow out. So...the shipping must include lots of costs they are trying to recover.

Carol

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Probably. Most of the plants come from Thailand & Japan. Barry Yinger, the owner, has people collecting for him & I suppose they divide the plants & propagate over there, then ship over here. They definitely have some very unusual & rare plants.
