Mexican Fan Palm
Washingtonia robusta

A very tall one in Phoenix, zone 9b. The shorter ones on the left are 'Washingtonia filifera' maybe.

Possibly. Probably.

are these palms very wind resistant? to me they seem that they are just too tall and spindly to resist wind well they just look weak. maybe it is just that i am used to the palmetto trees down here staying smaller because of the hurricanes (although we dont get many in Hilton Head because we are kind of protected by the deep curve between NC and FL). if there is a really tal palmetto here, it means it hasnt been through a hurricane recently... or it was lucky

We get 50 mph winds occasionally.

We have literally thousands of Washingtonias like those here in California where the winds get up to 70mph occasionally, and though we see LOTs of branches falling off of sycamores and pines, I have rarely seen a palm down. Occasionally one must, as I see a split trunk base now and then, but these plants can take a huge amount of wind and bend a lot without any harm... dead fronds fall off and seed goes everywhere... but they take wind just about better than any other tree out here.

So do you think they could resist hurricane wind or should i ask someone in florida? which category would yall guess?
Category 1 Hurricane - 74 - 95 mph
Category 2 Hurricane - 96 – 110 mph
Category 3 Hurricane - 111 – 130 mph
Category 4 Hurricane - 131 – 155 mph
Category 5 Hurricane - Above 155 mph
