Esperanza seed pods

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

The pods on my esperanza are brown. Does this mean it's time to harvest? Best time to plant seeds? What is germination rate?

Same question for Orange Esperanza.

Thank you much.

Ooooh vossner, I didn't even know there was an orange esperanza! Where did you find one? I have several of the yellow ones and I really love them because they are such long bloomers and are so carefree. Is the orange just as tough as the yellow? Please let me know where you found it.

I got it last year locally, dont remember where. But I went on a wild hunt looking for it. It seems like they are easier to find in San Antonio. Our lovely Hazel (htop) told me she thought they had some at Rainbow Gardens. Sure enough they did and they were so nice! They let me pay for it with the promise I would pick it up in a couple of weeks. During the same time I managed to find one locally, so after acting like a crazed woman, I had to call Rainbow G. and cancel my order. Call them.

I've heard the orange is less vigorous, but mine, which remains potted (temporarily) has produced lots of flowers and has grown a good bit. Still, it does look a little bit more delicate. I bought it late last summer.

I highly recommend this plant if you can find it.

somebody tell me about the seeds. pretty pls, sugar on top!!!!!!!!

I haven't harvested them before but I believe if they are brown it's time to harvest. Will ask my daughter, she knows everything, LOL - actually she's a brilliant gardner just doesn't realize it yet. If she knows I will pass the information on to you.

Sorry, I got so excited about the orange one, I forgot the seed question. The seed are ready to be collected if they are brown and dry. If they still feel "plump", let them dry out before storing or they'll get moldy. (I found that out the hard way). I wonder if the seed will come true to parent of if the orange is a cross and will revert to yellow? Thanks for the info on Rainbow Gardens, I'll try there and see if they have any. I think I need a bigger yard!

My know it all daughter told me that the seeds from the orange cross that she and I have, Tecoma Stans tangerine, will not bloom true- how exactly she knows this, or thinks she knows this, I do not know. I do know that my tangerine has been very easy to root and while not the same as growing from seed you should be able to make cuttings of that one- I did so many I lost count, gave many away and have one or two little ones still left and will likely be making more since this last bunch of rain has encouraged lots of new growth.

April, you are aware that ALL sons and daughters know way more than their parents, aren't you??????

When do you do the cuttings? I thought Htop told me she hadn't been successful rooting the orange one. I think I have the all orange. There is a gorgeous one that is orange with a yellow center. I'm letting the seeds dry at present, and will try them, but I'm more of a "cuttings" person.

thanks for the info.

I have made cuttings all during the growing season and have done some soft and a few hard wood cuttings. This plant doesn't seem to be to picky. I used cheap rooting hormone (yep bought it at HD), stuck them in potting soil in the shade for a week or so, kept them moist, not too wet, moved them into the full sun in a week or so and voila! Vos these are so easy that they should recommend them for beginers- gives us lots of positive reinforcement!

Oh and I am becoming all too aware that our children know more than we do and lest I forget I always have someone to remind me, LOL.

Vos finally talked to my daughter. She said that she believes but doesn't know for sure that seed for the cross we have, Tangerine, will not bloom true. She says she could be wrong. It's worth a shot anyway, you can be the experimenter and let us all know. We should compare what we have and share cuttings!
