After trying to attract differant kinds of Butterflies I realized it would take some time to attract alot of differant kinds. What if those with one kind could mail them (a few)to someone with a differant kind. Now if you were looking for one kind you'd better have enough plant material to feed them when they arrived. How would you package them.I don't think the heat would be a problem ,but the cold sure would.I understand there are places you can order cats from but I've never done it.Has anyone out there done that. Are there any teachers out there that have ordered cats for there classrooms?Any ideas Is it just a bad idea. Remember it would have to be straight up trades and you would have to handle your own postage so Dave wouldn't put his foot down.(I think ,but maybe I better ask him first). What do you all think of this ?
Don
P.S. lol maybe a future cat trading forum
Trading Cats ?
Bump
I think this would be a fun thing to do Don. Especially for those who are into butterflies bigtime like so many of you on this forum are. I wish I knew enough about them to help with details but I'm time and butterfly knowledge challenged.
I hope others will participate and your vision becomes reality :)
By law, any exchange of butterfly eggs or cats must be within state lines, not between states...unless you have some kind of professional license that specifically allows sending them across state lines. Even those with the license can only send certain kinds of eggs or cats, according to the laws of the states they're dealing with. There are obviously problems with sending diseased eggs or cats and spreading those butterfly diseases to other areas. There are tests that can be done for some of those diseases (OE comes to mind, but there are many other diseases). BTW, the heat would definitely be a problem also. Some packages are left in fairly high heat at some postal transit locations (my father was a postman) and then there's the postal boxes that are out by the road or in community clusters of boxes out in the hot sun...the heat could definitely kill them at the destination in that case. I've never sent any butterfly eggs or cats....just too problematic, but I know of people that do that. If you should do it, make sure it's legal and maybe use UPS and specify the number of days allowed in transit?
Linda,
Thanks for all the info.I didn't know it was illegal.Sure don't want any trouble.
