We found this little thing on the truck tire.
Looks like you have a walnut sphinx moth. See:

for a distribution map. The hind wing position is very characteristic of this species. If found during the day, they are usually passive and will ride around on a fingertip to places more secure than tire rims.

it did not try to fly away.
