Hi,I have a most beautiful Bromeliad plant I received from my daughter. It has 2 or 3 baby plants coming off of the bottom.I am a real newbie at this I would like to put each in its own pot.Is there anything special I need to do? What type of soil do I need? I do not want to injure mamma and end up killing it or the babies.Any advice from you experts would be appreciated.Thank You!
Starting Bromeliad Pups?
Hi cedarnest,
It helps if you can tell us what kind of bromeliad it is.
Can you add a pic of it??
You don't have to remove the pups from the mother but if you want to then you can do as follows.
Most bromeliads pups can be cut when they are 2/3 the size of the mom.
It's pretty basic just cut the pup as close to the mother as you can.
Some you can just break off....
I just lightly dust the cut on both pup & mom with rooting hormone powder or leave it to dry over night, then pot it up in a moist medium. It depends on what type of bromeliad it is as to what the best type of medium to plant the pups in.
Whatever you use make sure it is well draining, most pups die from rot after being over watered.lol
Then just set it in the shade in a warm area & it should grow pretty much on it's own.
Enjoy,
MsC
Thanks MsC,Here is a pic of the plant. There of course was no tag so I am clueless to what its name is??If anyone knows what is is called please let me know. Thanks for letting me know how to wean the pups.I may try it later on.Thanks again sincerely for the help.Cedar

Oh My! thanks so much!!I am a Ninny today!! Thanks Again!!
Hey we all have days like that...lol
That's a beauty!
You can just leave the pups at the base & when the tall bloom stalk dies cut it off. That one should make quite a few babies for you.

You have one the very many Guzmania hybrids. Hybridizers have gone wild with Guzmanias developing smaller plants with larger influorescenses that stay in color for many months. One can't hardly find an upscale hotel lobby without them. The other commenters have given you good advice on propagation.
Ironically, many Bromeliads are sold with a packing of Tillandisia usenoides (Spanish Moss, also a Bromeliad!) around the base of the plant. I would remove it since you don't want the base of the plant to stay wet.
Dave.
