Bulblets, can they be shipped?

Newport News, VA(Zone 7b)

Hi, I have some of those tiny baby bulbs on one of my oriental lilies. I have popped them into soil in the past, and given them to friends via a damp paper towel, but I was wondering if I can send them in an envelope to a friend...if so, how should I package them?

Thanks,

I get bulbs in the mail all the time, and different people use different methods. Some I get in peat in a ziplock bag, and bareroot items are usually in damp paper (towels or newspaper) and then wrapped in plastic. I prefer the peat when it's as warm as it is now, 'cause damp plants can start to mold really quickly.

These are the tiny bulblets that grow on the stem, can these be shipped, or are they too little?

Might I suggest you put them in a padded envelope and send them regular mail. I've received several that way and they were not crushed.

If you are concerned, you can always add some packing peanuts in the bubble envelope too to prevent crushing.

That they had been successfully shipped was the key part! Should I enclose them in a zip lock with damp paper towel, or will that just steam them with the weather? I sent some hosta earlier this year in bags and should not have.

They'll rot in plastic bags.

That's what I needed to know, thanks!

One new question...how would oriental lilies do in North Dakota? I think my friend is in zone 3 (brrrrr). I am 7b.
