Not butterflies but...

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

I just had to share this with you all. I noticed something on one of my zinnias and when I got closer I found it was little bees (I think) crawled up under the petals. They were barely moving and not making any noise. I wasn't sure what they were doing but wondered if they were actually going to sleep!

This pic was taken just before dark. Using the flash made it look a little darker than it was but without the flash it was a little blurry.

So tonight I wondered if they would be there again so I went out in the darkness with a flashlight and there they were!

Now I just have to check on them in the morning. Anyone know what they are doing??

hmmmm I don't know unless they are trying to catch some small insect at night

I think your little bees are actually Potter or Mason Wasps. they could be the Mason Wasp (Euodynerus foraminatus) http://bugguide.net/node/view/15980/bgimage

I'm not real sure what they are. I thought they looked more like this tho, because they have brown stripes. ? http://bugguide.net/node/view/8544

Now I'll have to find them during the day and get a pic. They aren't on the flower this morning.
