I have three hummer feeders which I keep full all the time. My question is, how can I keep the three Rubies from guarding the feeders? The other birds do not stand a chance of drinking because they are immediatly driven off in feirce battle. Thanks John
Question
Hi John,
What I did was to put different feeders around the area....3 within eyesight of each other and two a bit farther apart out of sight of the others....the bully stays mostly around one and the others spend time trying to chase the others away from each other one...there's always a couple of feeders out of sight that no bully hummer bothers. The shy ones frequent those so no one goes away hungry.....the problem I have is wasps....we have traps out, we are constantly out there swatting with a battery swatter and spray everytime we find a nest but they just are all over the feeders.....they chase all the hummers away and I understand they are actually dangerous to the fellas...any suggestions for me? Thanks, Deb
Deb put a butter bowl lids on a porch rail or somewhere close to the feeders. Put some nectar in it and they will hit those first since it is easier for them to feed from. I have pics of bees feeding. You could see them turning red from all the liquid inside them lol.
edited to say John, Deb is absolutely right about putting feeders out of sight of each other. They are very territorial.
