Brug Party

Hagerstown, MD(Zone 6b)

Some of my Dh work buddies stopped by a few nights ago and were amazed when they pulled down the drive. They came right in and wanted to know what smelled so great. When we told them it was the brugs they had to make a trip around the yard to see each and everyone. I was amazed that they were even interested. They insisted that there better halves see the brugs. Now I had given each one of them a smaller brug in the early spring but they just didn't see the potential for those little plants and very much neglected them. They had a big change of heart. So to show case the brugs to their girlfriends we are having a "Brug Cookout" this evening. I am going to run around and see what I have extra so they can each have another brug to take home again. It's a good thing I have some spares.

Gosh, can we all come too? LOL Your yard looks so beautiful and I can' believe all your brugs in full bloom.

I just love the shape of your first brug blooms. I have always thought that was such an attractive look. However, I do not think it is CG, Dott. Does it have a darker outer rim? It almost looks like Tropical Sunset to me.

I love how you arranged them all too.

Sure Kell, hop on a plane and get you butt here. I'm getting ready to mic up the potatoe salad in a few minutes.

Yes, the out rim of the first one that was traded to me as CG is turning orange and should be stunning tonight. I also have tropical sunset so ran out to check real fast and tropical sunset's leaves are not as smooth and they are also much larger. We will see. Tropical Sunset has tons of buds so it won't be long for it to bloom either.

I'm am excited since this is my first yr growing brugs in the kind of mass.

Gotta go fix the Pot. Salad and will be back later tonight if time allows.

They are gorgeous Dott. I have absolutely non blooming in this heat. I did have a couple buds on B. susanne and B. Mt. magic, but when I went out to water this morning, I noticed that they had all dropped. We got up to 115 yesterday so the brugs. are really struggling.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Very beautiful Dott. You've certainly got a green brug thumb!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Your yard and all your brugs with their beautiful shapes and foliage are beautiful. The shape and foliage of all of them are wonderful. The pinks are my favorite, but the setting for the yellow one in the first picture looks like something out of Home and Gardens. We are so hot here in South Texas that my brugs just never look like that. The foliage on mine was all turning yellow, so I sprinkle epsom salts all around thinking that would help. All it did was turn them even more yellow. About the only time that they ever have a full flush is in the Fall. I would love for them to look like yours in the summer when everything else is in bloom. By the way, what do you feed yours?

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

oh my goodness Dott your brugs look awesome ! Wish all of mine wre blooming size but they arent , but am getting a couple of flowers here and there.

Let us know how your party went Dott! I bet everyone was so impressed with your yard. Did the brugs put out their fragrance and do their magic on your guests?

Thanks all. I wish you all could have been here. We had a great time but I am still so exhausted. Everyone played badmitton and volleyball and I am sure everyone is feeling it this morning. As soon as the ladies pulled in the drive and jumped out of the vehicles I heard "I need one of those tree." They couldn't believe their eyes and noses when the sun finally went down. The one girl still has the 2 I gave her in the spring but had no clue of the potential. She has those 2 in little pots and only watered when she could remember. Her DH called when they got home and this evening they are going shopping for bigger containers, soil and fertilizer. They are hooked. I sent everyone home with their own brug. It was a hard decision on what to let go home with them.

Caren, I don't know how I got all of them to bloom at the same time. I just fertilize 2 a week and messenger every 3 weeks. I don't know if it is just luck or if they huddle together at night and just wanted to make their caregiver thrilled. I still have a lot that are budding and haven't bloomed yet.

Jerodsmom, I wish we could do something about the heat. I had most of my buds drop off Tiara. I have never see a pic of Susanne but I hear it is a really nice flower but just not in circulation much. I would love to see a pic when she blooms.

Minigrannie. I have some of that terrible looking foilage around here also. I sprayed with Malathion a few weeks ago for my japanese beetles and some of the brugs resented it and the foilage looks terrible. I also have a lot of the yellowing on seedlings I am growing out. Most of the ones in the pics are older varieties that I don't think can be replaced no matter how much hybriziding people do. I feed twice a week with Peter's 20-20-20 plus I put garden fertilizer in the pots at planting time. I tried a lot of other ferts. bit went back to peter's since I get my best results from it and it is very afforable in the large boxes.

Oriole, I do spend most of my time outside. Forget the dishes and the vaccuming. I'd rather clean the yard and take care of the gardens. I have all winter to clean the house, LOL.

Thanks again everyone for your compliments. I just try to keep the flowers happy and they do all the rewarding.

gosh, those are gorgeous plants!! If you ever chop back Pink Velvet- I'd sell my first born for a piece of if!! LOL

I need to be more diligent about fertilizing 2x a week. Mine get a shot every couple of weeks. Guess what I'm going to do today!! I've had to spray for jap. beetles, but so far the plants haven't seemed to mind it.

Beautiful pics

Keep track of who gets what . Then when the dog and raccoon have a fight and kill plant , you know who to get a cutting or 2 from .

WOW! Ditto on every post! A brug bloom heaven! What fun, (you little enabler!) I'd rather be out cleaning than in cleaning, any day. Now if I could get my friends and family motivated (I think they think it's too much work). But I've worked much harder on less rewarding things, like cleaning the garage! - B

i'm so jealous! dott, they are all beautiful! i've planted them in the hopes of one day having blooms; but at this rate, i'm losing hope. thanks for all the pics...keeps me inspired!

Hagerstown, MD(Zone 6b)

Tony that was my thought. Everyone has tags and I told them to make sure they keep them in with the pots. I know exactly what went where.

I gave a brug to my best friend over 4 yrs ago. It was my first winter rooting cutting and I had excess in the spring. She still has the plant and the tag, Coinsidently my friend and her Dh called right before our company arrived and said they were sitting in the yard admiring their blooming angel trumpet and were thinking about me and thought they would give me a call. How is that for a coinsidence. I don't get to see her very much since she is so busy and it was a pleasant surprise.

Aunt, that is my way of thinking. My garden is my therapst also. I take care of it and it takes care of me.

Hagerstown, MD(Zone 6b)

I wanted to add this note. I read somewhere to get the plants to put more energy into the plant to trim away all of the sucker growth. I can't say it is the reason they are all blooming right now but it seems to be a big energy booster for the main plant when I trim them. My plants that have more suckers are slower to Y and grow. It could just be a coinsidence.

Dott,

I don't often stop at the Brug Forum, but I was looking for a posting I read a couple of weeks ago and opened this thread because the picture was so inviting.

I have enjoyed your pictures and your narrative, truly impressive. Thank you for taking the time to allow us a glimpse of the 'little piece of heaven' you have created.
