New to gardening
Hello,
I purchased 30 lilium bulbs ( Orienpet and Trumpet blend) on July 18, 2006, and they are all alive and growing in the bag. I was wondering if these can be planted this late in the season! I live in zone 5 (Michigan). I realize they won't flower, but do they have to be planted, since they have already sprouted in the bag? Will it delay or lessen it's chance of sprouting in the spring of '07? Can they be planted in the fall or are they a spring planted bulb? I guess I should have asked first, are these winter hardy in zone 5 (Michigan), or do they have to be dug in the fall? Any help would be greatly, appreciated! Thanks....P.S....I also purchased 40 cannas ($2.00), and 180 gladiolus ($3.00), same questions for those also.....Thanks Again......
Discount bulbs can they be stored for fall 06 and spring '07
Good luck with that. Go ahead and plant the lilies in the ground now, at the proper depth. If they already have sprouts (likely) then don't fill in the hole all the way until they grow tall enough - add soil to fill as they grow. Since they will only have 2 or 2 1/2 months to grow you won't see blooms this season and maybe not next year either, but they should recover eventually. Cannas and gladiolus are not winter-hardy in your area. Plant the cannas now in pots/containers and give them as much sun and heat as possible before frost to encourage them to grow, then keep the rhizomes indoors (cool, dry area such as a basement) until next spring, and hope for the best. No blooms this year but if they survive the winter they should be OK next year. The gladiolus are a toss-up. In my experience they take about 3 months from planting to flowering and I don't think you have quite that much growing season left. The corms are fairly resilient and may actually survive storage until next year if kept cool and dry... but even so they may not do much more than grow foliage next year.
