Fuyu persimmon

Santa Barbara, CA(Zone 10a)

My fuyu has not bloomed yet. I got fruit last fall, but I don't remember when i got blooms. Does anyone else have this tree.? Is it blooming yet?

Fuyu persimmons bloom after the tree has leafed out. The flowers are difficult to see as they are green. My Fuyu persimmons are approximately 2" in diameter right now. You didn't mention how old your tree is, but it takes a number of years for the tree to get large enough to bear large quantities of fruit. Oriental persimmons also tend toward alternate bearing, producing a larger number of fruit on alternate years. I hope this helps.

I'll try waking up a sleeping giant.

I planted two fuyus a year ago, and they are struggling to stay alive.

This is what one looks like today (the tall, spindly thing in the foreground,)

The bushy thing behind it (with the guys) is the result of an avocado seed I planted eight months prior to my getting the fuyus. (I have even had to prune some of its foliage.)

Does anyone have any luck with them -- the fuyus, I mean?

flyboyFL, has anything on the Fuyus grown? I'm assuming you planted it last fall? Did you fertilize it in the spring? Then again early summer? Has it had any water issues? From looking at the photo, its roots have to compete with other plants for water and fertilizer. Are those roses planted around that persimmon? If they are, roses are heavy feeders and they probably snatch up any fertilizer you have given your persimmon.

I planted a 'Chocolate' about 4 years ago. I purchased it from Stark Bros. It's "trunk" had a caliper of about 3/8" when it arrived. In the 4 years it has been in the ground, it hasn't put out much top growth. It's about 4-1/2' tall, sends out less than 50 leaves, but the trunk's girth is now over an inch. It shoud be much bigger than it is, but it has gone through two severe droughts, one which lasted 1-1/2 years and the current one we are in which started last November. Even though it gets watered deeply on a regular basis, the surrounding soil just sucks the water up. I do need to improve how and when I fertilize it.

The verdict seems to be stress

Maybe I skimped on the planting -- but I don't think so. It was last fall, and the tree had buds, which leafed out OK. But, the leaves shriveled at the ends, and the experts seem to say that it shows a "zinc" deficiency. Seems weird.

We have automatic sprinkling, limited to one day a week -- but i do augment it with hand-watering, when I am around.

Maybe adding mulch will held, as it breaks down and adds to the soil quality. I'll try anything to get at least one of the fruit before I depart..

They came from Just Fruits, here in Florida -- and they suggest three fertilizing a year. One cup of 10-10-10 the first two years, then go to 5-10-15, thereafter. Never realized these critters were so particular.

Hang in there, and be well
